bassist to invade open mic nights

most of the open mic nights I have been to always have singer/songwriter types, james taylor wannabees.wouldnt it be cool to have about a dozen bass players show up? If you live in the hudson valley,ny and want to try this let me know.or let me know what you think of this idea.

We have that type of sit-chia-shun here in Indy, I stopped by a place called the Mouse Trap at the Wednesday Family Jam at there were at least 10 bass players. 4 to 7 strings. This has become the norm. Its pretty cool except house amp always has a problem... 3 of 410s working or you are playing via single 18 but at least it doesn't make a "gaacking" sound. There are good drummers to go around and if you play the house gives you 2 comp drinks of your choice..including the good stuff.

He may not be the best player on the planet, but that was a very rude and unneeded comment. :scowl:

Thank you for the support, but with a bit over a year of playing under my belt, I know my skills need improvement. The songs were meant to be funny. Another musician who seems to be a fan of mine told me that he thought an audience member was going to, shall we say, "have an accident" because she was laughing so hard at my rendition of "Boris the Spider" last Saturday.

ooo... The mouse trap. Years and ages ago I lived just north of the tennis courst in Broad Ripple Park, couple of blocks in from 65th and Keystone. I had completely forgotten about the old Mousetrap ... (Yikes!) The music scene in Indy was just abysmal when I was there. Glad to hear it's picked up.

Open mic scenes are kind of what you make of them in my experience. I go often. I'm usually one of 3 guys (Passinwind is another) and we all share backing up the other folks there. Last night I was it for 3 hours. Got a lot of playing in. Learned a few tunes. Sang 5 or 10 tunes and had a good time doing it.

You do have to learn to take the good with the bad. I've had a chat with a couple of guitards after backing them and given them the run down on what it is like to chase them around. Often they pick up aon it and come back better in a couple of weeks. Once in a while they get offended and don't come back - win, win either way as I see it.

I play and sing acoustic guitar at open mics. I play a lot of 'em (sometimes five a week if there's no payin' gig). I often bring a bass to accompany other performers, but not to play solo. There are some nights where I only leave the stage for a few sets, so I guess bassists are in demand. I play electric and acoustic bass guitars, as well as double bass.

There is only one local I know of who regularly solos on his bass (a nice ol' Stingray). Even though I play bass, I find most solo bass performances to be dreadful ... a lot like public masturbation ... the performer is gettin' off, but no one else is.

I don't think your idea would make the venue owner particularly happy, really.

It funny, the Mousetrap has become a little Funk/Jazz haven...Freakbass (Bootsy is mgr sometimes shows up) plays every 2 months and the place is STILL tiny. The musicianship of the recent players has been very good to really intimidating A lot of pickup bands come out of the open mics here and the crowds including a lot of chicks are there to hear players and that makes it a lot of fun!

John Belushi got it right in Animal House....

Um, I will not ever go to an open mic night again, on purpose. Too many ovulating, emlightened men (douchebags) with an acoustic guitar warbling some **** about lost love or how sensitive they are towards the plight of women....Honestly these "men" should be tied to a chair and have their own music played at therm till they piss their pants and promise never to do it again!

A big +1 to that! :scowl:
