I find the TB crowd here to be a pretty good lot, myself. There are always a few bad apples... such is life. You also have to find the right forums for your interest. Do searches for the type of gear or styles of music you like you use. And most of all relax. There are a few on TB that seem to enjoy stirring the pot and enjoy getting the thread fired up. Seems they have nothing better to do. Ignore those users (engaging them only adds fuel to the fire) and learn to take the forum for what it's worth. A bunch a widely diverse players talking bass!

According to the title of this thread, you are actually referring to all bassists. Don't name the thread "Bassists are an arrogant bunch" unless you want to offend practically everyone on this forum. And get banned.

I finally decided to make an account to respond to this, but I've been reading this forum for about a year. I've hardly come across anyone on this forum who "dismissed" bassists for playing simpler styles of music. The openness of most of the people on Talkbass to all kinds of music is what attracted me to it in the first place. I don't see where you're coming from.

This is basically what I was trying to say, without everyone flipping on me. That's what I've noticed.

However, I love this forum. It's a great tool to learn about things and talk about our favorite instrument, etc.

I'll play some devil's advocate - there ARE some arrogant people on these boards. And some of those people seem to post a lot. On a bad day I run into more than a little overstatement, opinion as fact, dismissive attitude, trolling, eye-rolling, name-calling, snarkiness, general meanness, etc. Other days, though, I only run into nice, helpful people.

i try not to be arrogant with other bassists. however, i do state my beliefs honestly and without reserve. one of those that gets me into trouble a lot is stating how knowing how to read music and learning musical concepts through jazz with a good teacher is the quickest way to get good on bass. but that's just the truth. i am so not a jazzer, but i certainly appreciate knowing what i do about it because it's helped me tremendously.

what i hate, though, is being called a snob about it when i worked my ass off to get it done. nothing snobby about it at all. it wasn't very expensive to learn, and anyone can do it if they put in the work.

anyway, if people have a problem with it, talk to the hand ;)

Nothing wrong with learning or knowing jazz. Jazz is my second favorite genre behind rock, but the point I was trying to make was that there are certainly alot of people on this forum whom act like Jazz is the only form of music that matters, or is acceptable, and if you don't play jazz and slap and pop, and play 32nd notes, you're a bad basssist.

Bassists are just like people, and by and large, there will always be one group of people who think another group of people are arrogant, or mean, ignorant or nice or whatever else they think they are.

The internet is a funny place because it's very hard to interpret what another might attempt to intonate with keystrokes, words and emoticons. Often arrogance can be taken from a very opinionated or passionate post. Sometimes, it might just be arrogance.

My point? (Aside from endless rambling, that is.)

You opened up with "Bassists are an arrogant bunch./ SOME are." Well, taken on it's own merit? It's a bit of hypocrisy. It's also true in some cases. Enter the whole "public forum" thing, and BANG. Strap your seatbelt on.
