Bassists don't solo, ever!

I don't think like anyone else I think. To me, there is no rythm section or whatever what.

they aren't time keeper .

The quote is taken out of context to make it the point. ..... There are no time keepers in music. .... Once the time is counted in, that's the last time, time is counted. ..... If you haven't come to that realization, maybe because you haven't been playing long enough, one day, if you're lucky, you'll get there. ..... And that's what you have to accept to be a good soloist. .....

Yeah this was my point. I don't need time keeper. But here I see a lot of people claiming they are the rythm section and play with the drummer to groove and lock with him so they let the guitar play whatever they want.

Sorry man, in no way was I meaning to attack you, just stating my opinion on Steves playing. I also realize that different styles afford different liberties and restrictions. For instance (sorry I'm a metalhead, most references will be metal based) modern melodic death metal band Children of Bodom, though one of my favorites, has a bassist that rarely, if ever, steps put from a strong supporting role in the band, and I really don't think the bands music suffers in the slightest for it. all IMO of course;)

I dig the vibes of your tunes too man, you got more?

Ha! No bro, that wasn't a response to you -- just the general opinion of those who kept taking my posts the wrong way.

More stuff? Sure. Here's a vid with a band doing some pretty out stuff. And it has...ulp...a bass solo! LOL! (But it's short) :D

And those who maybe think they can solo but can't, complain about others complaining on talkbass.

Hypothetically speaking of course
If That was a shot at me my resume speaks for it's self,I don't talk about who I work with on TB that much because that's not what I'm on here for but trust me I have gotten paid very well for a long time by people who also think I can solo when needed.

I come on TB to Look at gear and talk bass because I love it not to have someone who obviously is unaware of who I am or what I've done take shots at my ability's

Yeah, me too.

Don't know bout anyone else but I listened through the whole solo and thought it was pretty bitchin, guys got some chops

I listened to it too, and one thing I noticed was that Uriah never lost the groove or feel, even at his choppiest. If you go back and listen to the Youtube clip and just focus on the bass you'll see what I mean.
Reality check-this is obviously a pick-up Club Date gig. They're playing at some private party or event. I've got one of these tonight. I'm sure I'll have to do the obligatory bass solo during "Boogie Oogie Oogie" or "Superstition". It happens.
Uriah will doubtless be back on his day gig playing with Whitesnake or some other Arena Rock gig in Europe or around the World soon. He must be doing something right........
Just in case anyone's missed it, the OP was venting because some bonehead fellow band members were dissing the whole idea of bass soloing. It was sarcasm, he didn't really feel that way. Just a reminder......

Yeah the irony of the OP is evident but I have noticed that the cool guy thing to do on TB is to take shots at people who have the ability, and dedication to practice to be able to stretch out. I like youtube but I have to admit I'm beginning to look around for people taping because you don't want to be slipping, someone will be dogging you out on the internet about a video you didn't even know you were making

Thanks Roy, actually my band mates don't dis me taking solos it was all about the seemingly prevailing negative attitude seen here about bass solos. I certainly agree that bass is a foundational support instrument and solos are not always appropriate but when the opportunity is there why not? Really. Why should that ability in some way make me "less" of a true bass player? IMHO that ability makes me a better bass player because I have better technique, a broader understanding of music and can help support and propel others when they solo.

Thank you for clarifying that. I don't know what to say about that negative attitude, myself. A lot of times what makes it possible to play a decent musical Bass Solo is having some Musical Knowledge in your trick bag. You can imitate tricks you picked up on Youtube all day long, but if you don't know why they make musical sense you won't know how to use them and you're dependent on your ears and blind luck.
I think maybe some people get scared and intimidated by the whole process, so they dog it and it's practitioners instead of digging in and realizing they can do it themselves. I did that myself with Ballroom Dancing and Yoga until I gave them both a try. :)
I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing, which includes soloing. I think it's totally cool if you keep on doing the same. The Musicians I play with not only don't mind me soloing, they encourage it. YMMV, of course.

As my Mom used to say, "If everyone else jumps off a cliff does that mean you have to?"
Who knew my Mom knew all about bass playing? Go figure......:D
