Bassists that have left great groups

No mention of Greg Lake leaving King Crimson to form ELP. Technically, he left after the first album and tour (which were quite successful), but Fripp persuaded him to stay and sing for most of In the Wake of Poseidon. I believe that Fripp gave him a PA system in exchange.

While In the Court of the Crimson King was a great and successful album, I would say that KC acheived greater success in '72-'74 and '81-'84.

I've been watching the new Stones Some Girls '78 Texas Live BluRay, and MAN, Bill is the MAN!!!....(8) SVT stacks!!! His playing is just perfect, AND his left hand's middle two fingers are taped-up!!(lotsa pinky action...). 'Love that Micro-Frets Bass sound through the SVTs.... He (with HUGE help from Charlie) made the Stones sound like the Stones. He needs to come back NOW!

I couldn't agree more. Muzz is my #1 bass idol, because there is no style he couldn't do, and just kill. It gutted me when he left Living Colour.

And live? He was a complete monster. I saw them six times with Muzz and he played it completely differently every time.

I'm surprised nobody brought this up. Alec apparently could never cut it in the studio, and in fact did not write or play any of the bass lines on the albums. Hugh McDonald did all the bass work for their albums.

But, JBJ kept Alec on bass for touring, as he was with them from the start. As I understand it, at some point there were substance abuse issues with Alec, and that's when he was cut. McDonald then became the touring guy as well, but is not an "official" member, no photos, etc. Not sure if he gets album credits now or not.
