I know of a Canadian maker who has used basswood for blocks on a bass but read elsewhere that it is discouraged. Any thoughts?

Blocks are usually made of spruce, willow or poplar. Are those much harder? Have you made many basses?I dont know its a pretty damn soft wood, durability might be a little bit of a problem.
