battery access

I have a Fender precision special bass. It's Brill, but to replace the battery, I have to remove the scratch plate which is a long job. I was thinking of getting a good joiner to cut a hole in the back directly behind the battery, which could be covered with a fender neck plate and just four scews to give easy access to the battery.

Has anyone ever tried this or is a dumb idea for some reason?

Or maybe get a proper battery holder, which will work better, not damage your bass AND be cheaper than a neckplate.

Why even bother? You only need to change the battery once a year or so, so why go to all of this trouble, and potentially ruin your resale value, just to save yourself a couple of minutes to change the battery?

A neckplate is going to look laughable. Your best bet is a proper battery box.

Why do you think the stewmac ones are better? its the same crap made in china only stewmac charges 2 to 3 times the price anyone else does and then they charge you 10 dollars to ship it to you. its not better just because it came from stew-mac, or because it was outrageously priced. what all of us on this forum need are more reasonably priced, good quality parts. that is hard to find in this world.

No it isn't.
With the Stewmac box, you don't have to pull out the battery with the connector and wires, pull the connector off the battery, (I hate those connectors) and fit it onto a new battery.
The Stewmac (Gotoh) box has the terminals built in. You open it, slide out the battery, slide a new one in and close it.
I'm not sure, but I think Stewmac's price for the Gotoh box is about the same as anyone else's.

These are great. My Jackson Soloist has one and although I've never actually had to change the battery, it's easy to just pop open, slide the battery out, pop in a new one and it's done.

Yes those clips can be a pain. there are others available that do not use the clip on connector.
