Battery - inverter- amp: Busking without 120V electrons

My guitar guy and I want to do some busking where we know there will be no power available. Both of have non-tube amps (mine is a Genz Benz 300watt 10" Shuttle which draws at most about 200 watts, his is slightly larger, maybe 300 watts).

Do any of y'all do this? We saw it happening all over Europe a month ago with much larger amps than ours, so I know it can be done!

Any help with equipment recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

You can make a rig with car batteries and a DC power inverter but it's gonna be heavy and a pain to deal with. Best battery life will occur with high-efficiency amps. If your GB is class-D it would probably qualify. I would be careful about running the batteries to low on voltage as this might damage your amps.

There are several battery powered amps you can look into. Phil Jones Bass Briefcase is a great little bass amp but only has one input (includes built in charger but battery sold separate), Crate Limo TX50DB has multiple inputs (with built in battery and charger, and works great for bass, guitar, and vocals but recently discontinued. Has a 10 inch plus horn at 50 watts). Roland Cube Street EX (uses 8 alkaline or rechargeable AAs and doesn't appear to have the ability to charge the batteries, I haven't personally tried this one, probably comparable to the Crate Limo for vocals and guitar, but no idea for bass. 2x8 woofers, 2x2 tweeters and 2x25 watts). Be aware that Roland makes a smaller Cube Street (non EX) version as well that is far less powerful and does not have a rechargeable battery...It works on 6 AA batteries (2x6.5 speakers at 2x5 watts). Fine for guitar but probably worthless for bass.
 
I don't use batteries for busking, but I can provide some advice about using them in general.

Tripp Lite sells inverters, e.g. the Tripp Lite PV1000HF.

For batteries powering a ~500W load for any period of time, you'd be looking at some deep cycle batteries, to be able to supply the amount of Amp-hours necessary. I would not use car ("starter") batteries, or even marine batteries. These batteries are designed to supply high starting currents but are not built for capacity.

The cheapest source of Amp-hours I've found are 6V Golf Cart batteries. You can buy them at Costco. Two of them in series will supply about 170 usable Amp-hours at 12 V, which gives you about 2kWh of energy. 1.6kWh of delivered 120VAC if you figure that the inverter is probably about 80% efficient and account for its overhead, which would run your 500W of draw for about 3 hours. It may even be less depending on the discharge curve of the battery for a 3 hr. discharge (effective battery capacity goes down for faster discharges, the provided rating might be for 20 hr.).

The batteries weigh about 80 lbs. each, so 160 lbs. of battery will get you three hours of runtime. Add more 12V pairs in parallel for more Ah / runtime. If you want anything lighter you'd probably have to look at a small inverter generator, and you would have to be louder than said generator while playing.

For charging flooded lead acid batteries I find the Mean Well switching chargers do a good job at a reasonable price, e.g. the Mean Well PB-360P-12 (can be found on electronics suppliers like Jameco -- sorry, I can't post links yet).

Use thick cables for charging, discharging, and linking your batteries. At least #6 to #8 AWG for your stated 500W load.

Some very good suggestions so far! I'd only add that if you decide to use the inverter (vs the Phil Jones/Crate/Roland batt pwrd amps), get a "true sine wave" inverter. Never use the "modified sine wave" type inverters for audio or video applications. Also, when choosing a suitable inverter, DOUBLE the power rating you expect to actually draw, i.e., if your amp draws 600 watts out the wall, you would want an inverter rated for 1200 watts.
