After over 30 years of playing bass and usually just hauling around my Peavey Mark III 115 Combo my knowledge of bass amp / speaker combinations and pre amps, and other add on gear was some what lacking to say the least. However, after finding this forum I have gained quite a bit of knowledge. If my Peavey Combo hadn't of been stolen out of my storage unit I would probably still be using it. I have been out of the bass playing business for about 7 or 8 years. Going out to clubs and seeing these guys with multiple bass cabs and their high dollar amps has throughly impressed me. I just love the tone these guys are getting. So I decided to go that way also. Being budget minded I ended up with a Peavey Tour 115, Tour 410 and a Tour 450 amp and some other outboard gear. All of it used and purchased for under $700. I heard a guy playing one night was talking to him about his gear cause I really dug his tone. He mentioned that he had a pre amp. Hell, I had no idea of what a pre amp was at the time. After doing a bunch of research I decided on the BBE BMAX. Found a " like new " one for $150 and got it. Reading a lot of posts in this forum and others I never realized the following until I got it hooked up " properly". This thing totally takes over your existing bass amp's adjustments. Volume, EQ, Compressor, everything. All of your adjustmentss for your volume and tone will be done using the BMAX from this point on. And don't plug it into the same place you would plug in your bass guitar. You have to plug it into existing bass amp's " effects loop return". Only then will you get the full benefit of this great piece of equipment. I too, have the same problem as others as far as the master volume ( last knob on the right ). Anything past about the 2 or 3 makes things sound kinda boomy unless you turn down the gain ( first knob on the left ). I have yet to play a gig with all my new toys but I'm sure looking forward to it. This town is full of pickers to say the least. Nashville Tn.
