Beater bass

Older Hondo's(not the Longhorn), Fame, Epiphones, and SX's.

Bonus answer: for those 2 gigs in one day things, there are about 5 short scales from which to chose. The Greco shorty stays home unless both shows are in decent places and where the drummer won't get close enough to knock it over while it is in its case and cause a hairline crack in the headstock...yeah.

who all has a beater bass for rough/uncertain shows, and what do you have.
Here's one I picked up at a garage sale for 40 bucks I've been in the middle of fixing it up I love this kind of thing I clean them stick new parts on it generally have fun. Squier Pbass 15 years old

All my basses are beaters one way or another. Unfortunately the one I use the most has the most sentimental value (not the best tone either).

I just hope that no one wants to jack my junky basses.

It's the same reason I try to make my car look like a homeless person lives in it. Maybe I should tape garbage on my bass.
Haha the unattractive anti-theft device;)

I just picked up a cheap Affinity P, too, specifically to have as a beater. But to me that means one I can leave on the stand at home and not worry about it getting knocked over by kids/pets. I doubt it will ever see a gig. But you never know.
Man for real, mine stays on a stand and gets played every day! I play some intense shows occasionally. I play a Machine gun shoot twice a year. It's out doors and sometimes cold, and always smoky and Dusty, but the pay is killer. I've been renting a bass for such an occasion. I want to have a good bass, but one that I can just chill with and not be all uptight about.

Just got this Yamaha TRBX174EW a few weeks ago for $179 brand new! And actually plays pretty damn good and sound good too. Definitely will be using it places I don't want to take my Fodera or Roscoe basses! Also I keep it lying around the house so I can grab it quickly while the rest of my basses stay in their cases.

i own #5 instruments at present: one is an expensive custom build. one is a 'not cheap' (purchased new back in the day) fender lyte. one is a parts build = cheapie. and the other two are real cheap ($129.99!) chinese jobs that i've modded extensively.

but:

they are all 'equal' to me such that: they are all beater basses, or, they are all prized possessions, or, both! i would take any of them to any gig, for better or for worse. and i always take two, so i'm doubling my chances of mishap on the "rough/uncertain shows."

also: i think i'd feel worse if one were stolen than if one were to sustain a 'job injury'. i've experienced both: seeing them 'dead' at least gives some closure --- not seeing them anymore (theft) is a terrible, sinking, angry feeling.

I've been looking for a beater bass but be careful
I have come across some lets say well worn basses for sale and used the word beater bass in the conversation and pissed off the other party and ended up apologizing.
For myself it would be something that would come in contact with the dirt leaning against the booth at the Durham fair as I'm baking potato's. At the campfire when at the camp site and also sliding around the bed of the pickup ( in its case of course)
Been looking for a "P" style fretless natural finish maple preferably a short scale but have considered full scale.
