Are Sir Paulesque Basses versatile?

Not in my experience but they can do what they do very well, more like an upright in tone. I used to own a Rogue VB100 which with flatwounds was every bit as good as the Hofner in my opinion.

I am too interested in this, im wondering how aggressive these violin basses can sound when not strung with flats, I really dig the look and low weight, im curious as to how one of these Link Removed would sound strung with a set of shortscale Rotosound Swing Bass

I think you can play a lot of kinds of rock. Not the most versatile of the basses, but you can hold easily one having a Precision as backup on stage, i think.

I use roundwounds on mine just to give it a little more verstitlity, and that's really all I get: A little more versatility. It still has the hollow thud with a little growl depending on pickup/switching selection.
