Bee Gees walk off of interview

What do you think of this interview? The host starts off practically insulting them (in a joking way), especially their music. Then he just never lets up.

The worst part is that he tries to sound like he is some kind of "special" and devoted fan because he liked their earlier music more. But he can't really do that without dissing their work.

That's his persona--and sometimes it can be entertaining & humorous.
They had to know what they were dealing with going in.

He hosted the original British version of Who's line is it Anyways?

And just like Drew Carey & what's her name afterwards, Clive Anderson was often the butt of jokes by the performers.
And he had some very dry comebacks & all that.

That interview is about 30 years old, I remember watching it live on tv. The bee gees came across as a bunch of humorless fools that couldn’t handle a bit of banter. Walking off mid interview seemed outrageous back then, I think Anderson was quite surprised by it. That was just his style and humor, he did it with everyone he interviewed and everyone did it back to him. The whole thing probably hasn’t aged well, things have changed a lot since then.

I agree. That was odd... I didn't quite get why they walked off.

Don't think I'd enjoy hanging with those guys :) .

The worst to me was when he said they wrote "hit" songs, but it was "one letter short". He has no filter between his mouth and his brain. I don't like anyone who is that obnoxious and always trying to make jokes. This applies not only to Clive, but to anyone like that. Maybe the guy is just stupid.

I'm familiar with the guy. But in this interview he really dropped the ball. They shouldn't have gone on with him. I think Maurice kind of understood what he was trying to do. But even joking, he had no business even talking to them if he disliked their music that much.

It was one thing to criticize their fashion. But to criticize their music? And he was seriously doing it, not just joking.

Barry actually has a sense of humor and he has been even pushy with it at times. But the reaction he had here tells me that Clive really did a lousy job. I even sort of took offense to Barry's reaction here. Yet I knew that it was justified also. Clive really brought out the worst in Barry.

I get the impression the Bee Gees went on this show *because* they have a sense of humor and like to joke around. They are practically class clowns. But this particular host was an idiot.

Understand, I think Barry was a little too sensitive. I wouldn't want to talk to him either, after watching this. The twins are actually pretty cool in comparison to Barry.

But Clive really was responsible for how this turned out.

I wonder how many of the interviews were scripted, back then? Maybe a general outline of questions to follow, and of course some improv for entertainment.

These days most interviews read like a play... like a structured dance, only with words.

I do wonder what their incentive was to even appear on a show like this. I might have missed it, but it didn't sound like they were in a position to promote anything, which is usually the case.

Would have loved to see how Frank Zappa would have handled that prick. Frank was notoriously intolerant of journalists and their self-aggrandizing ways and much less gracious than the Bee Gees were here.
How dare anybody make fun of the Bee Gees. They are songwriting royalty in my book together with ABBA.

I never seen this interview, thanks for the post.....The Bee Gees DO have a good sense of humor historically (at least Barry does.......Robin has always been a behind the scenes jokester but becomes a Mr Hyde on interviews at times)......This shouldve been a good mix but I can tell about a minute or two into the interview that Clive and the Bee Gees were not getting good vibes from each other and there was a lack of chemistry.......Overall, it wasnt really a bad interview, bad chemistry ribbing aside, and Im still not really sure why Barry was offended enough to initiate a walk off.....Could just be a bad day
