First off, sorry if this is in the wrong forum. Mods please move it if so. My question is, though its been gone over before, how does one get in with other players and get gigs? Especially when moving to a new city. I hear of people "going to NY" or "going to LA" as if when you go there you put your name on a call list or something and wait for your turn. A lot of stuff is put together via craiglist, but for the most part its people starting up a band or desperate for a replacement. Do you walk into a club or somewhere with your bass and start noodling untill someone hears you and goes "Hey, come sit in"? Do you socialize with them then bring up that you play bass? Around here its sort of an established circle of players that already know each other and have various side groups with each other. My interest is jazz/fusion mostly. I've tried craiglist with zero results multiple times. There's a killer player in town that has weekly jam sessions but from what I've heard he has to give you the nod, so far no nod. Help a young cat to get out and cut his teeth!
