hello, i'm jackson from the phillipines. im in a variety band we play in bars here in the phillipines.. i start playin bass about 4 years ago... i used 4 string jazz bass, in those 4 years playing i did'nt had a formal lessons or a formal teacher coz its hard to afford a teacher here, and even though i can ,they'll teach me only the basics. i just cover bass lines that i need to play in the band. i learn by my ears, just playing it like its in the song, i was exploring in the internet coz here is where i find some technics that i use in my playing. in my exploration i've watch some artist like victor wooten, billy sheehan Marcus miller etc. i learnd a little from them but its just not enough... latest I've watch this band that is called dirty loops and I've kind like there sound and how the bass sounds to, but it just so confusing there so many notes... i want to learn and to play like that... i just dont know where to start and how , i dont have a clue.and what kind of genre it is.i have another bass greg bennet 5 string.. i really hope that someone could help me here, i'm really want to learn. sorry about my english. thanks.

Song Surgeon Pro will slow down songs, has a 31 band eq built in to help isolate the bass and will record anything that plays through your speakers. I have it and it works very well.

I think it's asking a lot of yourself to jump straight into Wooten, Sheehan, and Miller as a beginner. That's like learning to drive on a tractor-trailer. I would focus on learning scales first. Learn how to play through them across the entire fretboard, first slow, then fast. Once you can run through scales at speed you'll find it's a lot easier to follow fast bass lines. From there you can go on to modes, chords, etc. Also, this book is great for exercises if you can get a copy in the Philippines... http://www.amazon.com/Bass-Fitness-Exercising-Handbook-Guitar/dp/0793502489
