Beginner Bass Recommendations?

I really did want a short scale at the beginning, partly because the one I fell in love with was a short scale, and partly because I just thought it'd be better, being a teen and all. But it's hard to find short scales in Korea let alone an ibanez mikro. I will consider it later when I actually get a choice, though. :D

I'm certain once you've started rockin' hard in front of 20,000+ adoring fans, then…and maybe only then…they'll let you choose your own bass. :bassist:

But for color? Sorry…not until you're up to 30,000+ crowds. It's a rule. :p

Go for a used Fender American Jazz. Easy to play, sounds great, won't out grow, retains value, can keep forever or sell for atleast what you paid if not more. Optionally American Precision....same deal.

your parents are stupid squares, but you already know that hehe

Squier is EXACTLY what you should get

Jag or full scale, up to you

Just remember, unless you are joining a band, you're gonna play it sitting down so weight isn't such a factor, ease of playability is your main ctriteria.

Just remember, people with small hands can play full scale basses, they just have to move a bit faster that's all.

mm, it's pretty rude to say this, but I've known that my parents make bad decisions....a lot. Especially when it's about issues related to me. The one that I got is a full scale, but if I actually decide that the bass is for me (I'm genuinely hoping that it really will) then I'm definitely going to try a Squier later on.

Sooo...I got my bass yesterday!

For my first bass ever, I'm pretty happy with it. I really like the color, and I hope this baby will lead to me becoming a dedicated bassist and music lover. A big, big thank you to everyone that left suggestions, I've got them all in a seperate document, ready for referencing later on. I really didn't expect so many people to reply to this thread, and it was actually flattering that people cared enough to help me get started, both in getting to learn how to play and in joining this site. Thank you so, so much.

I started out on an Ibanez BTB205 (35") and used it for 3 years until I went back to shorter scales. A little painful in the start but really increased my flexibility once I went back to a shorter scale. I also remember being nervous about continuing on violin due to my big bass hands. Then I saw Karl Roth and stopped whining. Same goes the other way around for Brandy Bones (Big John Bates; small vs. big)

EDIT: Looks great, love the white color on basses, have fun!

The best advice that I can give? Sell everything you own, beg, borrow and steal all the money you can,
and buy the best instrument you possibly can. Having that bass in your hands will make you play better,
will make you aspire, and will make you millions (it can happen).

In the end, even if you then switch to the uke, keyboards or tamborine, you will always be able to get
the most money back for it when you sell. Do it.

I was gonna reply to this…

I'm terribly excited for you! Congratulations and Welcome to the Low End!! :hyper:

Now, to complete the process, you have to start a NBD ("New Bass Day") thread, complete with a whole bunch of pics of your first-ever bass. It's a tradition here on TalkBass; No Pics = No Bass. :snaphappy:

Is it new or used? Also, I see you got the passive model. I, for one, am very curious about this brand and what they have produced, as I'm certain many others are.

Love it to pieces, 'kay? ;)

Just remember, people with small hands can play full scale basses, they just have to move a bit faster that's all.

Indeed!

I made the thread! I also tried to answer all of your questions there as well (so...might be fun to check it out? :D?)
