Behold! A Record Setting Sadowsky

In my experience, lighter basses are fatter sounding and punchier than heavy ones. But heavy ones are brighter and sustain more.

Although I recon that the sustain thing is highly over-rated.
None the less...
My 3.5kg 5 string sustains very well.
I think that may have more to do with how well a bass is built than with the weight of it.
 
Regarding neck dive....

I find all Fender style basses to be neck heavy when sitting down and to all balance fine standing with a strap, regardless of their actual weight.

My current Fender Jazz is well-balanced on the strap, but my 1990-ish Jazz Bass Plus was neck-heavy when strapped on and really bothered my shoulder. Gotta say, I like a light bass, but too light (less than 7.5 lbs) and I feel as if I'm missing something. I'm not referring to the actual sound, just that feeling of having a solid piece of wood in my hands that I kind of like.
