Behringer BX4500H

im looking at buying this head. I play through a GK 410BLX right now.. any opinions? should i go with it or should i hold on a bit and look for a better head... if so what would be a better head to go with.. i play metal btw

If we were talking about a PA rack component or a mixer or a set of powered PA speaker I'd tell you to stop posting and go buy them. But since you are talking about that bass head that I regret spending $250 on. Please don't. I am asking you to leave that head alone. Even though it only blow fuses that I replaced and it continues to work. The tone is awful. My ears have grown and I had to spend more money.

I have that 4x10 it is not bad. For the price you did good.

I have the 300 watt and the 450 heads. Both have never given any trouble at all. They are easy to dial in a nice sound with, no matter what others say. I only have 300 bucks in the pair, and use them as practice heads all the time.

I couldn't agree more. Even if this particular amp is one of the few unbreakable ones without the annoying hum, the tonal disabilities will eventually drive you nuts.

They love to bash behringer on Talkbass, I've owned three of their heads one of them being the amp in question. I never had a single problem with any of them in a variety of situations and powering various cabinets. I had a Gibson GB-440 which is basically a Thunderfunk amp at the same time that I owned the Behringer 4500 amp, and I thought the tone of the Behringer sounded better as much as I wanted to like the Gibson better. The Behringers are cheap, powerful and sound great. I bet a majority of people would pick the Behringers flat tone over many of the over priced solid state heads out their in a blind taste test.

i suspect a GK Backline 600 would probably be a better bet... not posting from hands-on experience, just from prior experience with GK and Behringer in general.

EDIT: my behringer mishap came from a 200 watt Keyboard combo I had for about a year. I literally put it in my bedroom and ran a keyboard into it maybe 15 or 20 times, and after a year it died. I never even MOVED it. My band also had a small behringer PA that died within about 4 months. The keyboardist of my band bought a behringer keyboard amp (before mine crapped the bed) to use for live shows as an onstage monitor and it died after its 3rd use, which was unfortunately after the 90 day warranty. I would NEVER trust a behringer amp onstage at a gig, no offense to any of the above posters. That said, I've had the Behringer BDI21 sansamp clone and it's held up well for about 3 years, and it sounds surprisingly good. They make some ok stuff, but i would never want to depend on it when it matters. As it is we got burned pretty bad when that keyboard amp was D.O.A. at a pretty big gig.

My Behringer problems were never failures or lack of power... They never sounded good. To this day I regret selling the 1x12 combo that I had. Now I need a portable rig for the bedroom or basement jams.

thanks for all the replies.. mixed results.. this particular amp has a 30 day warranty so i think ill get it and test it for a couple weeks.. if i dont like it ill trade it back for maybe the backline 600 or a peavey tour 450
