being a double jointed bassist

double joint is a pro on the plucking hand but con on the fretting hand. I had to develop new techniques to avoid my fretted hand joints from being locked which was a pain, but for the plucking hand i don't see any negatives, but positives such as ability to play softer, and more dexterity when playing with 4 fingers etc.

I want to run faster, can someone please break my legs?

I want to live forever; can someone feed me to a wood chipper?

I'm having trouble understanding believing this thread is for real; will someone hammer a spike through my skull? There, much better now...

Of all threads someone had to resurrect from eight years ago, it'd be hard to pick a dumber one.

No kidding. The entire time I was reading it, I was suppressing the urge to break in and state how totally dumb this thread is, and also that it was getting such serious responses.

But on the other hand, it does show how helpful TB'ers can be, even if it doesn't help. A dumb idea, no matter how you look at it is just that, a dumb idea.

Now, will someone please break my fingers too so that I can get those nostril angles that really work.

I'm a huge supporter of breaking your fingers to play bass faster/better.
1. Wash the hand to be broken well beforehand. Make sure to remove any nail polish before as well.

2. Selecting the right hammer is CRUCIAL. Simple one sided mallet type hammers will NOT work. Remember: We're trying to break fingers here, not smash them flat

One like this is just what you want

3. Anesthesia! You can't do this fully conscious, but there's no "Right" way to get the sedated effect needed for hand breaking. JUST MAKE SURE TO MAINTAIN ENOUGH AWARENESS TO LIFT HAMMER. Alcohol has been my favorite way of getting nice and relaxed for the procedure, but non-drinkers can try Acetone vapors, glue, or if readily available, Ketamine

4. Place your hand flat on a somewhat rigid concrete/gravel surface. Level ground is good, but avoid a completely smooth surface. This will give your hands the "grooves" all the hot bass players have sculpted their hands for. Bring the CLAW end of the hammer down straight into the center of the back of your hand. Immediately you will notice that your fingers have done something we call "unstretched". You will be able to play all of those neck running licks, fret those seemingly impossible harmonics, a new world of bass playing has opened!
