Double Bass Bent endpin post

I'd guess that given the general low end, cheap Chinese bass shaped object quality, the endpin may well have been a reasonably good fit when it was manufactured but the low quality unseasoned wet wood likely shrunk so that the fit is what it is now. With a bass like this, there is no need to crowd shame Rob's or any of the other suggestions. Rather, they are somewhat necessary evils to make this and other similar quality basses work better with what we are given within a reasonable budget.

A cheap Palatino will never be a 200 year old Italian bass and it should also never attempt to be or be subject to those levels or pricepoint. You could easily spend $300+ on a fancy new oversized endpin and installation at a professional luthier's shop along with installing a new muffler bearing and possibly even a tapered plug and my guess is that it would not sound the slightest bit different...!!!

Practice more, worry less....

That rather looks like an cello endpin. Typical cello rubber tip and rather small for a bass. That might be the reason why it gets angled so much.
I don't think the problem is soft wood in the lower block.
Measuring the diameters of endpin plug and hole might give us some insight if my cello hypothesis is correct or not.

I don't think it's a cello endpin, as there is a notch a few centimeters from the bottom, and it looks like a 10mm rod. From the last picture though I agree that it indeed looks like the socket was undersized from the beginning and the bass was assembled and shipped like this. The resulting damage happening as soon as the bass was put in tension.

Just a thought, you may be able to strengthen the block by flooding it with thin CA glue.
