Slightly off-topic. Used my Shuttle 9.0 and one HT112ER tonight at an outdoor rig. For a few seconds during setup I regretted not bringing two cabs...then I remembered just how potent this cab is, and how much it loves it when the volume knob goes a wee bit higher. The sound was massive. :D

I am totally intrigued by the AE212, though. In typical bi-polar fashion, one minute I'm hoping my store gets one in soon, and the next moment I'm hoping they don't. Temptation...woof.

I think for your tone goals, the HT112ER thing is perfect. If you eventually want a bit more grind, upper mid brightness (versus that pure, airy, upper treble with the bit of hole between the top of the driver and the woofer) and upper mid articulation, the AE line might be worth a try.

I'm just guessing, but I imagine the AE-212 is going to be VERY Shuttle friendly. The 212 should really help warm that head up. Of course, the HT112ER's do that, too.

I need to do some more experimenting with the Shuttle and TC heads through this cab on Monday...

+1 I really dig the Shuttle amps with the AE410.. grindy, bright, punchy, but still not harsh. Should be even better with the slightly fatter AE212.

As usual, I can't leave well enough alone. A mix never sounds as good the next day, so of course I had to revisit this one. There's also some more info I can share to give you even more access to the tone of this cab. Let's start with the raw tracks:

"AE-212" Raw Chords (100% bridge PUP, bass & low-mid cut, slight high-mid boost)
"AE-212" Raw Bass Line (100% neck PUP, slight high-mid boost)
"AE-212" Raw Lead Line (both PUPs, slight high mid boost)

The first step this morning was to "lush up" the chords. I added compression (3:1) and a lo-cut EQ (80Hz, Q=1, Gain = -9dB). Then I cloned the track and panned one copy hard right and the other copy hard left. I also delayed the right copy by 50 msec. That results in this lovely sonic canvas:
"AE-212" Chords Only

Bring in the bass and drums (drums 15% left, bass 10% right):
"AE-212" (Chords & Bass)
"AE-212" (Chords, Bass & Drums)

The I treated the lead line to some heavy compression (8:1) and a Leslie rotary effect.

Bring that lead line into the mix panned 20% left...

Hey guys,

Here's a quick clip of my Alleva-Coppolo LG5 (5 string alder/RW 60's style J bass) with the Markbass F500/AE212 rig.

Tweeter is at noon, F500 EQ set completely flat... zero boost of anything. A-C on-board preamp engaged, with just about a 10% bass boost. No compression, no stikin' key of E... nothin'!

My recorder automatic volume limiter thing kicked in after about 5 seconds (forgot to give it a level setting signal prior to recording), but it is pretty even after that.

GREAT cab!!! That rig really allows that 60's growl to come through. You can really hear it in the last part of the clip when I'm layin' on the E string for a while.

So, just wow. I spent an hour running through this cab at my local store last night. Various basses, all using the GB Shuttle 9.0. Just freakin' wow. What a terrific cab. Everything is where you'd want it - plenty of lows, ample mids, and highs that are crisp but not thin. The footprint and weight are both very reasonable, and all things considered, so is the price tag. What a great match beneath the 9.0 - plenty of oomph, and every bass (Lull, Roscoe, Sadowsky, MTD) sounded great.

Still trying to rationalize this one for my use. The biggest "pro" is that I'm finding that two HT112ER's is almost overbearing on the low end. Not boomy, just chest-thumping hard, if that makes sense. The biggest "con" is that for most of my work a single 112 (or perhaps a single 310) is more than enough...especially with the amazing output of the HT. I'm worried that the AE212 would sit far more often than it'd be used. Something to continue mulling over for a bit, but I would definitely recommend checking out this cab for anyone in the market.

I'd agree with all that Jerry. I think the low end on the AE-212 is indeed a little "looser" that HT112ER. Not in a bad way, just different.

Someone over in Ken's thread asked for some fretless input... so I did a quick clip!! :D:D

This is my fretless Roscoe Century Sig V though my amp rig (Alembic F1X preamp -> Crest CA4 power amp) into the AE-212 (Peluso CEMC6 mic, etc.).

Seriously - this was mostly selfish. I wanted to hear your bass in more of an ambient setting, but especially through this cabinet. Freakin' amazing. In more general terms, though, this type of recording really does, IMO, give an idea of how a cabinet will sound in a live setting...which is really my sweet spot. Even though I love working in a studio setting, I'm mostly a live player. And at that, the last time I played through an amp/cab setup in a studio environment was...geez, 1996 or '97. Everything else has been direct.

So...thanks again for that effort. This really is an amazing cabinet. Enough so that it has me mildly regretting buying two of the HT112's earlier this year. For environments where you don't have reinforcement...or if you just need the extra stage volume...this cabinet seems to be the perfect choice. It's got me thinking dirty thoughts....like parting with my beloved Epifani UL410-1.

Again, great playing, and that bass of yours....just wow. Thanks, Greg!
