I guess the hatred of anything labeled "disco" affected people's objectivity......the bigger factor really was the backlash against disco, as Bernard said.

i agree, and i'd have to confess that me and everyone i knew at the time (jazzers) used the term ("disco") in a disparaging way --- but we also knew that there were great players in the genre --- we just saw our audiences evaporate...they went to the dance clubs instead of coming to see us...

Maybe that was the article I used to have? I remember it having that same picture of him with his Stingray in front of a recording console.

This was great read. Very telling . I see the music industry hasn't strayed much from its divisive ways.
Sad , but true. Bernard seemed to be a man of great character. I know have some insight as to why he might have been playing that last concert in such poor health.

It is nice to know a musical hero is/was a good person because that is not always the case.

Back in the '80s, Nile and Bernard were guests on a late night talk show. They sat on stools while being interviewed, and at the end they played the "Good Times" groove. It was magical-- they didn't need Tony Thompson, or the acoustic piano and Rhodes.
They just had incredible chemistry... And those guitar and bass parts were brilliant, of course.
I wish I could find that clip somewhere.

I think it might have been a local New York City show. Hopefully, it'll eventually make it to YouTube.
