you should definitely take your bass to a guitar center to at least try some of the "off the shelf" amps including the fender rumble ones.

The wattage of an amp is not the best indicator of how loud it will get. My 200-watt Traynor SB112 isn't noticeably louder than my Ampeg B-15N (30 watts) ... but it's about 60 pounds lighter!
The amplifiers of the new millenium put out a lot of watts, but they aren't significantly louder than old amps that make substantially fewer watts. We have smaller, lighter amps, thank goodness, and the higher power output makes up for smaller and lighter as well as providing headroom. If you want more volume, the most effective approach is more speaker and/or more efficient speakers.

I did play through a Rumble 100. Not bad, especially for $300. The next move up is the 200 with a 15" that people here have spoken against. The 500 has 4×10" but seems a bit too large and heavy for my purposes. The ideal would be about 250wt driving 2×10". What can I do?
the rumble 500 is a 2x10" cabinet and according to sweetwater it weighs the same as the 200I did play through a Rumble 100. Not bad, especially for $300.
