Best 300 buck (or so) bass?

Hello all,

I will get straight to it. What is the best bang for the buck bass in the 300 dollar range out there? I realize this is a subjective question but I am just trying to get some general ideas of good overall basses out there. I play alternative, rock stuff. I just wanted something with good action, and good tone capabilities. And nothing for live performances. It would be for recording (DI) only. Many thanks for anyone's suggestions!

Oh yeah I have read really good things about the Epiphone Thunderbird and a Schecter 004 (although the Schecter is 500.00).

Whichever Squier VM you prefer (Precision, fretless, or 70's Jazz).

For your purposes, I would go for the Squier VM P-bass, but some will prefer the VM 70's Jazz and thats a nice one too. Play them both and pick your favorite.

I was going to suggest the Squier VM series but DA beat me to it. So I'll second it, and also suggest a Yamaha RBX170 or RBX270.

All are fine inexpensive basses.

I have played a G&L Tribute recently, a very, very nice bass for the money.

i recommend the peavey millenniums. i have a 5er that i love and it was less than $300 new.

you can get them active or passive, 4 or 5 string. take a look

Yeah Id say go used and get a descent Ibanez or Schecter.

Used Peavey T-40. You would have to spend 3X your budget to get a better bass.

Used USA Peavey Millenniums are starting to fall into that range. They are extremely quiet so they'll record fine and have plenty of usable tones.

T-40's are pretty hefty, but if you'll only be recording you can sit down with it. And you get an amp cord into the bargain!

ED: Just got a T-40 myself , otherwise I'd be sure to bid on that one.

Great T-40 suggestion! I love mine, it's a tank of a bass, but you get US made quality for ~ $300!

Yamaha BB414. Great tones, and you can find used ones for less than $300. Also, you might be able to find a used Bass Company bass in various models for less than $300. I have a JT-400-JJ (4 string Jazz model), and its great.

Absolutely. No question. And the used market in general offers solid value in the price range $300-$400.

If you want to shop new, the budget manufacturers like Rogue and Jay Turser have winners like the Rogue VB-100 and the Turser JTB-401, but in each case you'll at least need to change strings. Not a big deal.

I've always had a soft spot for the Epi T-birds, but I am more a Fender guy. I'd check on the used MIM Fender J market as well. Those aren't bad for the buck.
