Best 4-string bass under €250 ?

not sure if Craigs List is in Ireland but many here at TB recommend used gear. Check the local classified ads. I highly recommend used, get more for your money.

Thanks bassmeknik, over here in Ireland we have Invalid Link Removed and Invalid Link Removed which are similar to Craigslist I think I'll keep an eye out for any used Squiers while I'm saving up, but if none pop up I don't mind forking out for a new model.

I'll remember to stay away from the Affinity models.

Thanks for all the replies guys I've decided to take the majority advice and buy a Squier! It seems they have the best tone and feel on a budget, and it seems silly to waste my money on something sonically and ergonomically sub-par over a vanity issue like brand-names!
I'm going to go with a Squier Classic Vibe, haven't decided exactly what model just yet though.

EDIT: Oh, just wondering - any opinions on the Washburn T14?

I think Vintage modified are just as good as classic vibe (correct me if I'm wrong) so why not look into vintage modified's too?

Get over "cheap names". Just a few years ago my Gibson Thunderbird was offered for 2500 € here in Germany, and I also play a Squier Affinity Precision and really, really like it.

I recently played a Squier Matt Freeman Precision and compared it to Fender USA Precisions in the shop - I liked the Squier way better.

It's not about the name.

Hi all I am new here so I ll get straight to it , I was a pro bass player in the good old sixties , and I guess I have played just about everything ,Rickers, Fenders,Gibbos ,
and have recently bought a new Ibanez SR700 , and I can tell you its bloody brilliant,

I always found Ibanez to be really good instruments, but lacking "soul", tone wise. Maybe that's because they have so many sounds available, and none of them is bad. My last 2 Ibanez were an EDC 705 (made of plastic, even worse sound ) and a BTB 675. But well, both of them weren't in the asked price range anyway.

What I like about Precision and Thunderbird: They have one sound, and one sound only, but somehow that's all you need. Same goes for Rickenbacker I think, but I never played one.

I never owned a Squier & always thought I preferred Alder bodies on basses, but I just bought a Squier VM Jaguar bass on evilbay two weeks ago, the black passive one with the block inlays & the PJ pickups. I love this thing, I guess I'm leaning with the tone wood not making much difference side of the argument because this bass is made of Agathis & it sounds better than many more expensive basses I've owned in the past. The pickups are great, I'm liking this bass alot more than I expected & if the Squier on the headstock thing really bothers you, you can always remove it.

Glad you found something you like! I guess it's a bit late to throw in my 2 cents on Squires, but I think they're great. My first bass was a Squire P, I played it for years. If anyone gives you lip for it being a Squire (which actually never happened to me) then just play them a kickass bass line and tell them to shut up.

I'll look into both options you mentioned.

Oh, the reason I don't mind playing a piece of junk is because I'm just at home learning.. but most reason I need a nice new bass is because my friends have asked me to play bass for their band, and I want something that'll look decent.

Is the Washburn T14 any good..? Squier is top of the list right now, but I like the look of the Washburn and it's within my pricerange.

Quite frankly, anyone who would give you lip for playing Squier is an ignoramus, and someone whose opinion you can safely dispense with.

As a happy owner of two VM's, I can agree with this statement 100%. At the very least, give the VM's a look.
