Best 4-string for under $500?

Really liking the Squier Classic Vibe Jazz. Would have been better in a vintage white - but not a banana pudding color like the "vintage white" deluxe jazz.

Yup. I think their sales are going to drop because of it. A modern looking headstock on a classicly styled body.

The new headstock looks "okay" here but it's not that different than a Tele headstock to begin with. It would never fly on with a Jazz or P body.

I just bought an OLP MM (I forget which one, it is the one with flame top) on eBay for $200 and played it at rehearsal for the first time last night. Wow, that thing really cuts through. Sounded really good.

I think you can get a NICE Carvin B4 for somewhere around that price. You would get American made,and bypass the "middleman". Also you can pretty well design what you want as far as color, pick-ups etc. I've had mine for 10 years now,and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Without looking at the other responses I will say:

Ibanez RD500. They are on clearance right now and worth 3x the price. I have gigged one for the past 18mo, until I got into 5 stringers...

Looks like you've got your answer. I have a Yamaha BB414 and can say it's more than worth what I paid for it (under $400) and I've tried Ibby 400's and 500's and they're exceptional basses for the money.

I'd look at a used musicman sub. Heck, you won't lose any money on it if you don't like it.

I wouldn't buy a new bass for under $500. Unless you have an urgent need, I'd lay back and buy used; you'll get a much better bass for that money.
