Best 5 String Under $1K?

Are you aware how many f*ckin times this exact question has been asked on this forum.... good god I wish they would ban me from this site , it’s a train wreck yet I cant look away...

do you think you’re actually gonna get any fact based answers here? no just an opinion and everybody’s going to say well I love my “insert brand here”,
so you should get the same

I come to TalkBass since I like talking about bass. The repeat threads don't bother me, and if they do I just ignore them. It's not that hard.

A Schecter CV-5.

Very vintage-sounding and very versatile. Passive. $699.
Yamaha, Ibanez and ESP-LTD are also good.

I thought these sounded really good but the CV 5 was really neck heavy that I played (5 in a row tuner headstocks usually are). Plus I think the 35 scale isn't the best for E-C tuning and chordal playing that OP is interested in. Still a very cool bass

My humble opinion only

Thinking about taking the plunge. I've been looking at Yamaha, Ibanez, Squier, Sterling Stingrays, Steinberger. Active would be cool but not imperative. I'm a guitar player who's been spending a lot of time studying bass recently. I have a PBass, Jazz Bass (both Fernandes), a Hofner Club and an Ibanez Talman. I guess GAS has taken hold. My interest in 5 string is to use a high C for chord work. Any suggestions?
Dean Edge Select , active & truly great sound & build quality. Flys under the radar

I'm going to risk falling foul of you and the moderators and I'm not being rude. These responses turn up time and again and even in threads where there are many well-appreciated responses. So,

There are plenty of reasons to ask:
People give opinions and opinions are valuable in developing a profile of what you might like and test out. (That's why there are so many car and motorcyle magizines for example.)
There are new basses constantly being released on the market that people may not be aware of but really want to be before they lay down their cash.
Not everyone lives near a music shop - and those who do might not live near a well-stocked one with a significant range of brands/models/price-ranges - those things translate directly into tone and feel/ergonomics. (My nearest shops are 2 to 3 hours away in towns I only go to for "events" like dentists, specialists etc. Neither has a wide range of wares although excellent service to be had a both. I play an SR Ibanez and neither shop even stocks Ibbys. I want to try a schecter Banshee and SBMM SS4 but they're 6+ hours away, and I don't live in "the outback", I'm just in a normal country town.)

I get the "not being able to look away from the train wreck" thing both metaphorically and after years of professional driving in a very real sense but this question is going to turn up a heap of times again so... Even if you do have to comment how about an emoji to smooth the waters?

Do you like Mahjong or Sudoku - (seriously, I'm not taking the piss) - they can work for me when TB doesn't.

Sterling Ray35 if you like that StingRay tone. Fender player Jazz V if you are after more of a Fender tone.

I try to buy used American instruments if at all possible. Used G&L's are in your price range. Once the cheap hardware starts to fail on the Indonesian instruments you can invest hundreds to "upgrade". Decent fret work and quality materials are important factors for me personally. Good luck.

Might be easier to delete your own account if you're so displeased with the site.

Ibanez BTB845V

33 in scale and set up E-C in the factory

I'd look for one used personally. They are 999.99 USD new

I have the previous version of this (the BTB33). Aside from the wood top and slightly different fingerboard, I believe they're the same. Assuming that:

The neck is fantastic, and the tighter string spacing and 33" scale lets you really fly around. But the stock pickups and electronics are really uninspiring. The C string sounds really nasal on the neck pickup (regardless of string type). I changed out the pickups and preamp (Aguilar OBP-3) and now I love the way it sounds. It's also a bit heavy.

The Yamaha TRBX five strings are super nice for the money. I have one that I converted to a fretless (and kept it with the low B). The string spacing (18mm) is nice, but I'd prefer something tighter (like the Ibanez) for chordal stuff.

Sorry but the only basses that will meet your requirements are way over 1K. You need AAAAAA grade maple to support a E-C configuration and an ivory nut embedded with Brazilian rosewood inlay.
Beside Ivory nut; I have put Brass nuts on a Fodera NYC and a Kiesel (actually that I'm trying to sell For Sale - 2019 Kiesel 5 String (LB75),W/ Aguilar PUs and electronics with new Brass nut in mint condition.) The brass works very well my friend Tim Bogert had a Brass nut on his Fodera Monarch 6 string that thing would sing! My Fodera NYC didn't but I had my Luthier put one on and it made a big difference with greatly improved sustain, clarity, tone, brightness and tune-ability. I'd swear by it!!!

I'm going to quote this again because it sounds like it is exactly what the OP is looking for... a 5-string that is set up for E-C at a reasonable price.

I was looking at getting one myself before I ended up getting a Mattison. I think the medium scale/tighter string spacing is really good for chord work.
