The last XL's were 400 watts @ 8 ohm so with 2 of those you get 800 watts @ 4 ohm while that poor head is pushing 350 watts @ 4 ohm, while with only one cab it gives a 250 watt @ 8 ohm ... only one cab will do fine

or maybe you can offer 400 for everything?
oh, right you don't have the space ... but you can stack it so it doesn't take more place then only 1 cab :p (or your place should be 'vertically challenged' )

Anyway: it sounds like a good deal

He's pretty firm on the $200 each for the cabs since theyre almost new, so that would be the 2 cabs and a free head, dunno if he'd go for that one lol.

I think this will do me very well while I aquire funds to get my dream rig together.

An upgrade over the Fender Rumble 15 combo I'm borrowing now...

That's exactly what I've been doing, its how I found the recent Hartke I was asking about :)

Cheapest: Behringer. I used to have an old BX3500T that I got new for $149. Used it for a while, gigged with it for a while, I think I ended up donating it to a church or something.

Best value: used GK 700RB-II or GK 1001RB-II. They can be had for a good price, they have a good sound and will last you.

Exactly - when *I* think about value, that $100 throwaway Behringer, nor the proposed Hartke rig is exactly what springs to mind... *I* think of pro-level gear at a huge discount on the used market - count me as extremely not impressed with either Hartke's 3500 amp, nor those cabs... The G-K's absolutely spank that Hartke amp - and for $200, a used Peavey 410 is a WAY better value than those Hartke cabs, IMO...

Find used or save up for new
GK 700RB-II or GK 1001RB-II or Markbass LMIII

I like Avatar cabs - sometimes they have scratch and dent. Check Ebay and Craigslist
They have 2 x 10s and 2 x 12s
If you have young strong back I would think the 4 x 10 would do whatever you need.

I think the GK 1001 RB-II and the 4 x 10 would kick!

I'd suggest that you check around for floor models... I just picked up a Phil Jones Super Flightcase as a floor model for $800 when I hadn't seen it listed anywhere for less $1300. I got extremely lucky, but it was certainly worth the phone call. I wouldn't have done much better getting it used, and yet I have a 2-year manufacturer's warranty to show for it.

From my digging around, yeah, its a good buy.

I'm gonna go ahead and get the Hartke stack tomorrow. Its well in my price range, more than I need (for now) and the guy has been very cool so far.

I can always add on later, find a good deal on a GK 1001RB and sell the 3500, and so on and so fourth.

If nothing else, I'll have my own amp instead of borrowing that monster 15 watt fender, and have trade bait for the future when I have more $$ to add to the deal.

Value will be in products that are highly respected yet have depressed resale. Carvin leaps to mind. Peavy too (but you have to be careful - some old peavy gear is just AWFUL). I'd avoid well known names like Acoustic, since their new amps have nothing to do with their old amps... and they aren't that good anyway.

Hartke is a good mention too - those old 4x10XL cabs are good cabs and are way out of fashion... But they is HEAVY! Same with the SWR Goliath. No longer fashionable but good.

Were I a bassist with a serious budget issue, I'd watch the ads and get me a used Carvin head with a Hartke or old SWR cab.

Well, just went and got my Hartke half stack.

Sounds amazing, dunno if it would take a 5 string on the lows, but with a 4 it sounds great.

Only problem is I over-estimated my available room, the 410 just wont fit the hole lol,

I'm gonna save a bit of $$ to upgrade my membership and put this up FT for a 210, or just something smaller than this 410 lol

It was also new bass day today, but that's another thread :)


Oh, also, I was mistaken, it is not an XL cab, its a VX

Keep an eye on the Carvin eBay outlet. They sell off ex-demo / scratched / whatever stuff there with the full as-new warranty.

Most watts/$ there right now is probably this which is 1500W for about $350. Power amp, so you'll need a pre / Sansamp pedal / whatever.

Thank you, it is a pretty big difference, but it really does sound quite good.

it just unfortunately doesn't fit lol, it's about an inch and a half too wide, or about 5" too tall, if either dimension shrank, it would drop in.

I'm gonna take the casters off it to give myself a bit more clearance for now, and go up to the local music store and see if they want to trade for a 2x10
