I'd think about maybe upgrading my Behringer amp first. For three k, you could get a whole new set up. For 3k, you could buy every bass I own or have owned, and every amp I own or have owned.

Yeah, if your profile is current, I'd think about getting a better amp first, or an amp in addition to the new bass.

And as far as the bass, it's so hard to recommend a bass based on a short list of criteria. "powerful, hits-you-in-the-face tone that's like a fist, not a warm blanket" can mean very different things to different people. The first thing I thought of was a Sting Ray, but then you said you don't like MM pickups. LOL. I agree that Spector might be a good starting place, maybe MTD or even G&L. Again, it's hard to know what that tone in your head might be.

The first three requirements are easy and doesn't require the budget you have. On the other hand, the last requirement is a Bass Cabinet and Amp.

ok, firstly, if you want a slim neck, you won't like warwicks. I have a jazz bass, and once i had kinda warwick fever, and went to a store, and tested almost all warwicks there was. I didn't like them at all. firstly, the string spacing was very little, y couldn't slap comfortably (im used to the jazz bass) and secondly, the neck looked literrally like a baseball bat.
The tone was ok, if you like a nice growl straight in your face, they are really good, but you won't get that classic sound like a jazz bass.
So, i have to say, that for your specs, warwick isn't a good bet. But go and test them for yourselve, I can be talking rubish, it is just my opinion

If I were you, I'd get a used Lakland or Musicman, and spend the rest of the money on a better rig, like a used Mesa M6 and 412.

I haven't been able to test any of them yet, but some basses catching my eye: the warwick corvette $$ neckthru, and the lakland joe osborne.

I would say a sweet used Lakland 55-94 would do you in all circumstances and it will run you $2K or less......you should be able to get a new one for a tad over your "budget"....

Seriously though, I bounced around from Ibanez to Fender to Tobias to Modulus etc etc etc, but when I got my first Lakland in early '02 I immediately couldn't fathom what I was thinking before that. Tone, all day long.

Muisc Man Sterling has balls...its not a sissy bass. J-like neck, but not too thin.
