Best Bass DI

i currently have both a Radial JDI and a UA Solo 610, i love the radial because it is so easy to travel with compared to the Solo but when i play in town i mostly do In-Ears and that is where the Solo does it's bang for the buck! Pure warm tones to my ears!
I am very happy with the Solo 610 simply because i have an option of what tone i want, from a vintage growl (by driving the tubes with more input and less output) to a super clean JDI like sound (by more output gain, less input gain), also has a mic/line switch so you can have less of your FOH board pre and more of the Solo's pre etc., i wish it had a POST Thru to get that tubed sound to my rig but actually most of these preamps or DI's don't, i've seen some rackmounted pre's that do
But i am very interested in trying the REDDI for myself, i have heard nothing but great things!

hey do you have a fender american deluxe jazz? that would be crazy because i also have one going into the UA....is yours the MK610 or just M610?
I've got a 96 american jazz 5-string that goes into the my M-610, but I don't know if it's deluxe or not...It's a great combination. Really brings out the natural sound of the jazz bass, but add a little something to it that's hard to explain.
What makes it a deluxe is if it has the active electronics with the 3 band EQ, so you would have Volume/Pick up Tone/(stacked)Lows & Highs/Mids

I have also been experimenting with their (A-Design the REDDI maker) EM500 Gold preamp as a DI to FOH... So far it is very impressive... Very clear with mucho headroom... DI or Preamp.. and i have run the REDDI into the EM500 pre then to FOH... very smooth and punchy with focus and clarity ..

I received that TAB-Funk V71 I mentioned. Unfortunately its gain selector broke in shipment (poor packing job), so I have to send it off to TAB for repair before I can do any real listening and comparison.

I was going to take a pic of the inside of the REDDI for comparison, but that's 14 screws I don't feel like dealing with. There are pics of the insides somewhere here on TB already. Essentially the REDDI has one tube, the V71 has two. None of those are 12A*7's. The REDDI has one massive audio transformer and a massive power supply transformer; the V71 has two substantial but not huge audio transformers and a same-size power transformer. The V71 has a parallel secondary balanced output that is post-tube and transformer, the REDDI does not. The V71 is a half-rack unit, the REDDI is a battleship. The input impedance of the V71 is 1 Meg, the z in of the REDDI is "minimum" 1.4 K (not sure how far a "nominal" rating would be from that "minimum").
I probably won't be able to comment usefully on the tone for a few weeks yet, until after it's been repaired and shipped back to me.

That stinks! Sorry that happened...now you have to stew in anticipation for the tone difference between your REDDI and your TAB-Funk. I'm anxiously awaiting your review...but at least you have a REDDI.

My REDDI was dropped, face first, out of my case onto the concrete in the parking lot of a studio.. from about 3 feet up in the air... ....by a GUITARD that was helping me into a studio..
it slightly dented the covers corner surrounding the recessed face plate, just slightly..It is a Steel cover and not an aluminum one thank god... A-Design spared no expense in making a well thought out sturdy box that is road worthy and great in the studio..
The Gain knob was untouched.... I like the idea that they have the slanted face to protect the REDDI. they must have had me in mind when they designed that thing...
The REDDI is a TANK... I got to the session and plugged it in and its perfect... and sounds as good today as it did two years ago when i got it... engineers seem to love that thing...

I am looking forward to this comparison! I heard great things about the TAB. The Reddi against the TAB shound be interesting!
There is a ridiculous amount of options available and you can get great results with so many of them. That being said, REDDI would be your best bet if you have the money.
I've also gotten great results from: Radial JDI, Countryman 85, MXR M80
Avalon U5 sounds great but a little to glassy for my personal taste.

I also tried the Avalon options as well and build quality is above average, actually excellent but sound wise compared to my REDDI the U5 was a tad colder sounding. Though I do love the rack option of the Avalon and the solid state design would possibly make it more road worthy if your running around a lot. But this is just a guess. I have not toured with either units and only have used them in the studio.

A 3 foot drop on its face to concrete is road worthy in my opinion....I think The REDDI is pretty road ready.. as i posted a few posts above how my REDDI was dropped from about 3 feet in the air onto the concrete parking lot ..And i was going into a session.. the engineer is a guy that i work wioth alot , and he has a few grammys under his belt.. he of all people would have noticed if there was something squirmy after that drop.

I would get a REDDI but the sweetness of the tube and such are only available on the XLR out, not the 1/4". Why would you not do it both ways so FOH and stage amp can benefit from the goodness? I believe I read the designer/builder was only interested in building "studio" gear and when directly asked said he didn't want to make the change so tough luck.
Kind of dumb marketing if you ask me. I think some of us would be more tempted to drop $700 if that were the case. I know I would.

That's why I love my Aguilar DB900. The 1/4 thru is also affected by the tube. Great design!
In fact, I rented the REDDI a few weeks ago for a session (in fact it was more to try it than for the session but hey, they paid the rental!) and to my surprise I didn't really heard a difference with my Aguilar. I have to say I did the a/b at home, not at the studio so it may be my recording gear that's not good enough...or just my ears...
I did record the samples and may put it on a webpage for you guys to listen if you're interested.
To me they sounded almost the same. In fact I was having problems with the REDDI because the signal was REALLY hot!
I too find stupid that a DI so nice don't have a tube-buffered 1/4 output. IIRC, the first models didn't had any 1/4 out; they just had the XLR and that's it.
Anyway, for one time I'm happy with what I own over something more expensive!

the REDDI is a great DI, but its also not exactly my personal fav, which as of now, the UA solo610 is in the front running.

The Neve or API or even a Mackie has input padding..
I would usually use the front knob and turn it down.. It will go from zero gain to + 20 dB or so..
I run mine up about 3/4 right into a Neve or the Erikson Montessi Em500 Pre amp then to Protools converter or Tape..
Live i have been running my reddi full bore wide open into a Harrison console at times.. or yamaha Pm4k with great results... to each his own thank God...
I used an aguilar Di only one time and i thought there was low end roll off.... it was a rental and who knows who may have abused it before..
