Call Carvin. Design you own bass over the phone.
You don't like it when you get it, send it back.
I have bought the returns. I like 'em.
They have a highly anticipated split-coil precision out now and everyone is talking about it.
Order one. $1000 bucks.
You don't like it, get your money back. Carvin will put in on e-bay for $700. I am waiting for the return.

You just might be able to find a nice 80's Alembic Spoiler for that price. Pretty hard to beat the build quality and lots of tonal variety at your disposal.

I'm also a big fan of jazz style Lakland Skyline basses.

You've received lots of good suggestions.

I would definitely go used. It's like buying a car. Let somebody else take the hit of paying for a new instrument, and save some cash.

I really like fender j's . I've been playing on a classic 60's for about a year and its been great ! Really well built . Last week I decided to finally get an 2012 American standard 4 in charcoal frost and all I can say is that I love it . Big upgrade IMO . For 1100 bucks brand new I couldn't pass it up !

Mine will be ready soon and I'll be able to comment on this. All I know (by conducting a research prior to ordering) is that there is a certain number of Carvin owners here on TB who are not happy with original electronics.
There's no "universal" bass tone - some people like J, some P, some MM, etc.
so IF he doesn't like the original Carvin tone, there's an option to upgrade, if he does - even better!

I think the unhappy ones didn't order the default (V/V/Passive tone/BT) version. If you ordered it b/c you want a nice jazz tone, then it's got it.

Used Lackland or Sadowski would be worth a look and feel imo. Or if yoiur going to go with the fender. Try everyone you can fins and pick the best of the lot. Instead of just rolling dice and hoping one you order is great. Check fretwork, weight, sound.

Carvin would be good choice to. If you get the five peice instead of single peice necks option. I think their single peice necks are weak compared to most.
