best bass for a growl without overdrive?

IMO Warwick Thumb, the bolt ons are a little punchier but don't have as much sustain. The Streamer Stage I has a very nice growl, tons of sustain, and a great slap tone. The Streamer Stage II has the growl, but a much darker overall tone. Thumb bolt ons can be had for a reasonable sum, Streamers are pricey!!! FNAs have a fair bit of growl to them as well....I might be a little biased toward the Warwick end of the spectrum...;)

IMO Warwick Thumb

I've been looking over various basses over the past few months, trying to find one that had 'the growl'. Pedullas, Warwicks, Modulus, Alembecs, along with the high-end ones from common builders like Ibanez and Peavey. Some of them very nice basses that came very close to the tone I wanted...but...

I purchased a Thumb last weekend. People have always said that a Thumb had that growl...it's unmistakable once you hear it. The ones that came in second and third of my big tone hunt was the Pedulla Thunderbass and, surprisingly enough, the Ibanez Soundgear Prestige.

I think even a cheaper Warwick would get you that growl with a correctly matched rig and the right EQ. I have heard so many Warwicks used with modern pop and fusion stuff that was amazingly growly and sat in the mix well. I have not played a Warwick live that sounded all that good, but I chock it up to bad strings/demo amp/luck.

Low end Growl:
Warwick Corvette - Standard or $$
Fender Jazz

Midrange growl:
Spector - Euro or Rebop lines and above.

But don't forget a very important part of growl; the strings! I'm a recent convert to DR Nickel Lo-Riders and it's true what the company says about the growl.

Both my J-24 and my MM both have good growly tones...But also very different. My favorite is my MM. Go to my myspace site and listen to the song "Stan is the Man" to here the MM growl most notable in the beginning....

BTW...Listen to "Groove in D", that's my Fender J-24...Still growly but a whole different animal!

MTD Kingston is a bargain growl machine.
