best bass guitar for 600$

I'm all about buying used equipment myself so I'd have to disagree with the BUY NEW concept, but I would have to agree with playing everything you can get your hands on. You may find something you like, then find it for half price on Ebay or craigslist.
I reckon you should try and save a BIT more (maybe...I'm not sure how much they are there) and get a Fender Jaguar...you won't be disappointed with one of them - its basically an active mix of Precision/Jazz without a P pickup...
I recommend 3:
1) Brubaker Brute
2) Sterling by Music Man Ray 34 or SB14
3) G&L Tribute L-2000
All of these also come in 5 string versions (except the SB14) and they all have excellent B strings.

Forget the $600 number, first of all. You may not have to spend that much.

+1 on the Ray 34. Should be able to score one for right around what your looking to spend. Awesome bass. Tonally versatile enough for everything I've been into, and great craftsmanship. It's the one bass I'll never part with....
Between the two, I like Schecter better. But keep in mind that those are going to be mainly soapbar rather then J or P pup basses. If the latter pup type more appeals to you sound wise then get a new Fender. If on the other hand your more into soapbar pup sounds. Which generally can either do a fair P or J pup simulation esp with todays active preamp basses like Schecter makes. Then get one of theirs new instead. I think schecters can work great in country as well as rock and funk. Main other brand Id suggest also concidering in that price range is the ESP B and F series, along with Ibanez SR series.
