Best bass overdrive?

There is no best. The best for me is the Reinier Gasoline Overdrive. Just such an amazing sounding drive pedal.

I've found that different basses react profoundly differently to different distortion pedals.
My Dingwall sounds amazing through the Tech21DUG, but my Yamaha BBP sounds awful and thin. Than again the Yamaha really likes my EHX Bass Soulfood.
The Darkglass Microtubes works well with both, but it's so adjustable that it's ridiculous. This isn't always a good thing as one can get 'lost' in the settings.

There's really no 'best' because it's not about the pedal, it's about the whole equation of Bass, Amp, Cab etc...

OCD is in my top five worst sounding pedals ever made.

There’s a number of versions, each with slight circuit differences. Although a low gain drive can be dialled in, it’s not really an overdrive it’s a primarily a fuzz. Which you either like or don’t. It puts a specific fuzz sound into the signal that can’t be dialled out. I have an OCD that I built from a fuzz dog kit and I have a similar model on my Aftershock, neither I like much and never use!

I'd be very happy if there was a best bass overdrive pedal. But imo my dirt tones depend widely on both bass i'm using and signal-chain and esp. comp > OD > EQ/preamp.

Quite pleased with dirt tones i get from these !

I've found that TC Electronic Mojo Mojo is doing a very nice job on bass if it goes for warm, tube-like overdrive. It can easily achieve the same sound as my Ampeg RB-112 with SGT overdrive, which I'm very pleased with and I wanted to get exactly that sound using my full rig. You can also get a higher gain distortion of course but I prefer low gain sound of it. Surprisingly it holds lows very well.

It’s a totally subjective dependant on the context of the band, style of rock - from Elton John to ufo/ rainbow, nickelback…….. all count as rock.
Also the rig you use will play a massive part in this. J bass and p bass, active or passive, valve or ss amps, 10”,12”,15” speakers all totally variable on taste.
I’ve played, bought and sold so many pedals over the past twenty years. Some were highly rated and raved over (sansamp, darkglass, source audio) but sounded terrible in my rig to my ears. They just didn’t fit with what I needed.

These days I stack drives to get the perfect sound for me and the context I use them for.
I always have a low gain pedal running and then add another stage to achieve different drive flavours.
Best always on ( for me)
Joyo orange juice
Ehx bass soul food
Dod bass overdrive

and added drives
Caline orange burst
Mxr bass fuzz deluxe
Ehx glove
Orange getaway driver
Ehx hot wax
And probably a few I’ve forgotten lol

it’s funny to me how I’ve spent massive amounts of money on all kinds of boutique handmade on the thighs of virgin unobtanium pedals, yet found what I was looking for in pedals that cost significantly less and sound perfect in the mix (live and recorded) for what is required.

• Way Huge Green Rhino V
• Creation Audio Grizzly Bass
• Tech 21 VT Bass
• Idiotbox Landphil

They each have their own tone but what they have in common is quite a lot of EQ/tone shaping.

That said if I had to pick only one, and to keep it relatively mainstream and not super boutique, not hard to get, or not really expensive, at the moment it's probably the Aguilar Agro. A close second would be something from Darkglass, just depends on what flavors you're looking for.

I heard one of those last weekend. Sounded pretty great.

Ok so I know this is a loaded question, but just trying to get a general consensus here… if you all had to pick only ONE bass overdrive, which would it be? Just looking to add some grit for the more rockin’ songs.

Best bass overdriver, or best overdrive for bass? There's definitely a thing to be said about guitar overdrives used for bass. Or even distorted guitar amps used for bass.
I bought an OD Glove from Electro Harmonix for my main overdrive tone, because I was looking for a plexi style overdrive in a pedal format. I personally like it alot!

Transparant, cheap, but still has a nice growl to it.

The two that have stood out as the best for me are the Free the Tone BB-2 and the Damnation Audio MBD-2.
I would also consider the Grizzly and the Pork Loin (w/ JohnK mod) to be great units that I would be happy using, were it not for the two I previously mentioned.

It's probably been said quite a few times already but Fuzzrocious' The Demon is my favorite overdrive. It's based on the OCD circuit and it does rock as well as metal really well ime.
