Best Bass Players

Okay, so we all know who the extemely talented guitar players are. No need to list them. But what about the best bass players of all time. :confused: I personly think Cliff Burton is the best, some of his solos are a mazing and hes a extremely good beet keeper. Matt Freeman from Rancid is aslo really good. If you hane;t heard of rancid, check out the song Maxwell Murder.

I think trying to identify the "best" puts making music in the category of a competitive sport. There are certainly different players, with different styles that you might prefer over someone else, but to call anyone the "best" takes away from this wonderful pursuit that we engage in called music. If they play bass, I like them. If they play bass and play the music that I prefer, I love them. Simple as that. No good, better, best, just different.

We need to remember Joe Osborn. I read an article once that said that if you listened to the radio during the '60s, you probably heard Joe at least once an hour. He played on several hundred hit records, including everything by the Mama's & Papas, The Association, the 5th Dimension, Simon & Garfunkle, America, Carpenters, etc.

I think the most beautiful and melodic bass ever played was "America" from Simon & Garfunkle's "Bookends" album.

i know words like best shouldnt be applied to things liek this, and favorites are subjective of course, but i would ahve to say that all fo these guys should be mentioned and would all be pretty hgih on the list.

jaco, jamerson, stanley clark, marcus miller, ray brown, ron carter, charles mingus, christian mcbride, john patitucci, edgar meyer, chuck rainey and victor wooten.

a few of my favorites in addition to that list of virtuosos and highly influencial players would be:

oteil burbridge, richard bona, matt garrisson and mshell ndgeocello

There's so many out there and there are so many styles of bass playing and techniques out there that some bassists are better at than others so I guess my answer would be the most versatile bassists who are good at what they do. The names that come to me, in no order are:

John Patitucci
Dave Larue
Victor Wooten
Adam Nitti
Matthew Garrison
Tom Kennedy
Jimmy Johnson
Ric Fierabracci

etc.etc.etc.

This list can go on for quite a while but if you look at my avatar you'll see all those names summed up in one person.
