Best Basses Under $400????!!!!!

Whose to say which is the best? Some prefer used MIM, some Ibanez, some Squier and a few others. There are any number of good quality basses in the $250-$400 range depending on what you're looking for.
I think my CV is worth every dime I paid for it but it's just as likely someone found a really nice MIM for a few bucks more that's a standout in their mind. Others don't like Fender styling at all and prefer other brands. Right now it would probably be easier to sort out the junk below $400 than pick a best.

Portuguese 4 string bass made in the Azores....cost around $225 US dollars....sounds like a mixture between a sadowsky metro and a spector ns2....but heard they stopped making them like 2 years ago...they still have a few around the islands.
Yeah i agree. I really do not want to buy used because well its used. I want to put my own blood, sweat, and tears into playing it. Not have someone elses DNA on it. LOL!!!!!

There's really nothing wrong with buying used. Actually, there are many good reasons to buy used, a number of which have been listed by previous posters. They've also pointed out a bunch of good used basses to look for, so the information is there for you to use.
If you're worried about having someone else's DNA on a bass, don't buy one from GC. Or anywhere else, for that matter.
Ain't that the truth. From a cleanliness standpoint, I'd rather buy from an individual than from a place like GC where germs operate on a revolving door. Besides, more than a few people have handled your "new" bass even if you buy directly from the factory.
I always clean a bass up when I get it. Polish it, clean the strings or replace them, etc. So it becomes "mine" and get all the gunk off if there is any. So it doesn't really matter that much.

Yea i feel that too sometimes. As whenever i play my main bass you get a kinda feeling from it then you would a bass thats already used. However this doesnt mean i wouldnt go into a pawn shop and not buy something if i really wanted to.
Not everyone like these, but some people do dig these bass guitars for how they sound. I currently own a peavey millennium bxp 5-string and it sounded pretty cool. it's a real keeper for me.
For consistent quality and playability, I have not found any better value for the dollar than Ibanez. Whenever I'm in a new place, I'll hit the local music shops, the Guitar Center, pawn shops (you never know where you'll find a hidden gem) and play every bass in the joint. So since I've been travelling for fifteen years or so, I have probably played a couple of thousand basses. New, used, boutiques, high-ends and beaters. All brands have standouts and the occasional dog, but Ibanez just builds a reliably good instrument you won't be embarrassed to haul out at a gig (sorry Squier guys, but you show up at a pro gig with one and you're gonna get laughed at).
