So I see mainly one pick up designs does an extra pickup add any thing other then an extra volume or a blend knob.

An extra pickup won't make the bass louder. What it will do is give you a different sound. You can get a different sound with a single-pickup bass by playing by the bridge or by the neck - multiple pickups have the same sort of effect, plus you can have different types of pickups with different types of sound as well.

For example, my bass has a single-coil Jazz-style pickup at the bridge, which on its own produces a growly, snarling sort of tone. I also have a split Precision-style pickup at the neck, which gives a warmer, more rounded tone with more of a punch. I've then got a blend knob which allows any mix of the two sounds. I find this a very versatile setup for getting the right sound to match the song.

Definitely get a used Squier Classic Vibe (CV) or Vintage Modified (VM) bass. You can pick up a used one for $150 - 200. I bought a VM fretless jazz for $150 on craigslist, and a Squier Deluxe Jazz Active V thru Guitar Center Used Gear for $190 including shipping. GC charged me for a gig bag to protect it during shipping, which I then returned at my local GC for a refund.

Pros gig with these (with a few modifications).

For younger folks that are not fully grown, there is a VM Jaguar short scale, and there is a VM Mustang short scale coming out.

These are basses that you'll want to keep as you become more experienced ...

You said it well, except i want to warn for Squier Bronco Bass, which has very weak Strat! pickup with 6 poles for 4 strings!

But soon coming Mustang has good mini split-coil Fender type pup, that bass will be a lot for money. 30,5" scale neck.
Then there is VM Jaguar basses with different pups & colors, to reasonable prices, about 220 euros here in europe, not over 300 bucks over the pond.

I am all about my Modulus', but really, there are some fantastic basses for under $200. There is nothing better than a good set up. Throw a good set of strings and have the bass properly set up and most basses will play well. Again, as your taste and ear improves, you will need to decide if your $200 bass is worth a $75 bridge or $80 in tuners or $150 in pickups and so on... Wiith upgrades alone you could be modestly at about $300+ on a $200 bass or buy a better bass for $500..

Used G&L Tribute. It may be a bit over $200 but it will be well worth the cheddar.

Can't go wrong with a Squier. I'm still using the $154 Squier I got in '88. Still looks, plays and sounds great, stays in tune, no complaints at all. The only thing 'wrong' with it is a little metal flaking off the knobs, which I could easily cheaply replace if I wanted to (I don't ...).

I don't think you could put enough clams into a G&L to make it sound or play better than it does when it comes out of the box. G&L is a match made in heaven!

I like my dean edge 1, that was my first bass. it has a great tone to it and looks pretty killer. It's red and has black harware which idk how it got there. I bought it used and it came like that but I can't find it anywhere online, it only has chrome option on guitar all the websites like guitar center and musicians friend.
