Best beginner combo pack

I'm trying to help my friend out who's looking to start playing bass but has very limited funds (like $300 or so) so he's looking at one of those starter packs (bass, practice amp, case, ect.). Now I know that these things are pretty crappy but this is his situation.

So, does anyone have any recommendations?

I like the Peavey starter pack (either the older one with the Milestone or the newer one with the Zodiac style beginner bass). Another good one would be the Ibanez starter pack. However I found a decent deal getting a friend a Squier MB4 and a small Peavey practice amp for $300 rather than a pack. You could easily substitute a Yamaha RBX170 or an Ibanez GSR200 into that equation and come out pretty close to $300. For the amp you could look at a Peavey Microbass or a Fender Rumble. Berhinger makes cheap practice amps as well. Plenty of options when starting out. Don't forget to factor in a tuner, cord, gig bag and strap.

I got a Peavey Max Bass 126 at the weekend... nice little package...

sounds nice (especially with the "vintage" transtube switched in) and has a CD/mp3 player input... (need an adaptor from 1/8 to 1/4 jack though...)

in fact, the low end on it is so good compared to my 2.1 speakers with sub-woofer, I now run my computer sound out through it (I never really worry about stereo anyway) and just jam along with my mp3 collection

The cd/mp3 input doesn't go through the vintage or tone control circuits... so it doesn't get "coloured" by those settings

You can always go for the used route. Best bang for the buck I'd say.
