My 72-year-old brother recently bought a guitar and wants to learn how to play. I've encouraged him to consider lessons with a teacher, though he may or may not pursue that. I'd also like to recommend an instruction book that can guide him step by step. Could you suggest a book that presents the basics in a clear and constructive way for an adult beginner?

I learned in college from this. I got a solid foundation on technique and theory, plus good background on styles and history, guitarists to know etc.
