Best Cab for the Buck?

Alright so I am trying to get some feedback on the best bang for my buck on a cab setup. I have a 70's model Ampeg V4B tube head and play mostly rock/blues. We play in small/medium size venues, up to 500 people and I am looking for the best tone that will keep up with the band. I have been using a 115 Ampeg Combo and it really struggles to keep up in bigger rooms. I like warmer/punchy tones, and am guessing most any cab will handle the low end on a 4 string bass. I play a standard 4 string USA Fender Precision Bass. I am looking at a 600 watt 4 Ohm Ampeg SVT 6x10 for $575, or a 600 watt 4 ohm Ampeg BXT 4x10 for $400.

Are these good deals? Is there something that would be a better option? Thanks!

Neither of those is a good deal if you're looking for the bang for the buck buy.

Although, the SVT- 610HLF combined with that amp sounds super sweet.

Personally, with a V4b, I would go for a pair of eminence 3015's vertically arrayed in a lightweight box. Lighter than the 6x10 by a bunch, and probably fairly close to the same price from Low Down Sound.

Funny about the eminence 3015 - is this what you are referring to? This ad came up on Craigslist today:

Used Ampeg 2x15 cabinet w/ two brand new Eminence speakers. This cabinet has been toured with so it has some exterior ware, but has never sounded better. Please email for more info! Must sell soon. Will consider trades!



What do you think would be a fair price?

$450ish. Speakers are $180 new. If the cab's structurally sound with some tolex damage I could see it going for ~$100.

Best value in cabs, strictly looking at bang for buck I would say something from LDS or Avatar. I can attest Avatar make great sounding, solid cabs and when you factor in the price they are really hard to beat. My personal preference for cabs however, dictates I spend a little more money on Genz Benz. Whatever you decide, buy used and save yourself some coin.

Buying used is up to you. I purchased a Blemished Hlf410, just had a couple of chips but was worth the $499 from ZZounds. Between $500 and 1,000 you can do well buying new. If you can't swing the $ for a new 810E then consider the 410HLF. I havn't played through a 610 but maybe a good deal will come along. Wait until 2010 if you can, deals will pop up in January. What everybody is saying about the other makes might be worth listening to . Genz Benz seems to be competive with The Ampeg Line........

Thanks for all the help - I went with the Genz Benz 410T-XB. It straight kicks ass - plenty of low end and a horn control knob to adjust the highs. It blew all of the other options out of the water in all aspects. Lucked out big time on the price at $350 too.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE GB 410T-XB! (USED)

Good price for that cab. I rocked one of those for a couple of years... those things are monstrous!
