I faced this problem recently and wound up with the sr-375m. Sounds and feels great, but the preamp could be better, though that comes with the price territory.
Make sure you get one of the newer ones though, I've heard the older models had a much worse preamp/pickup combo. I don't know which year changed, but I do know the newer ones have 5 knobs.

Used is your friend. Most of my basses were bought used. More value for the money. Just have to be extra careful in checking it over

I almost pulled the trigger on a S.U.B by Musicman that was 279. used at SAM Ash. Really solid bass for the $$......seems to get much respect here.

Gotta disagree. I had a Fender 5 P-bass for several years, great B string.

I stand by my opinion. You were lucky.

My peavey grind 5 was very playable. Even sound and great intonation up the neck, stayed in tune. Boring tone tho. My local gc had one used for $250 or $275 or so.

Drool worthy score. I used to have a mid 90's SR505, not exactly the same as the current (Body materials and pickups were different) but the neck, bridge, and tuners were the same... I sold it along with my Squier 4 string PJ back in '04 due to financial issues. That was a good bass. I never did get fully comfortable with the B string, but I didn't have it long enough to get comfortable.

U.S Peavey Foundation 5 . $200-250 sweet neck great sound. Usually a couple on Ebay or GC used. I Love mine and prefer a smaller neck and spacing like yourself.

The used world opens thing up a lot. New....
The squier vm 5is nice, but try it first as they seem to vary. Ibanez sr305 or sr405.
It is a bit heavy but I really like the sterling sub5. Huge sound and they have many more color choices now.
I had an inexpensive Schecter but it had horrible neckdive.

I just bought a brand new Squier VM Precision 5 string for a whopping $215 shipped to my door from another member here on TB . I don't know what others think about them but in my hands I can tell you it rocks the bandstand. I personally own a myriad of very expensive custom and production basses. I know what good feels and sounds like. This Squier is a good bass. It sounds just like a P bass and that is what the doctor ordered. The neck has a great smooth feel and the frets are filed down perfectly on the edge of the fingerboard. Ive put my usual Ernie Ball flats on it and now will have my tech do a set up but It played great right out of the box. It would be hard to beat it for the money but there are a bunch of cool and very functional basses at the entry level these days. A man could make a living with a $200-$300 bass........just like when I started playing! 1964

I love cheap priced 5 string basses ... But with cheap I usually have to mods and or repairs, but I also love doing that as well. The end result is 5 string basses that are sort of "one of a kind" I also like to do parts basses where I buy bodies and necks and assemble basses from random parts.

Same here. Maybe the B string wasnt as tight sounding as my Lakland (35") but it was more than usable for over 50 gigs.
