Best Configuration for This Tone?

Hi all, been lurking here a while and you all seem very knowledgeable :)

As a man who is just now beginning to become a little more well financed than I was previously, I'm thinking of expanding my collection of gear. So far I've been playing everything on a JHS Vintage V1004. I've noticed that Vintage sometimes gets bashed a bit round here but it's been a very good bass for the money and I've been able to get a reasonable approximation of all the tones I've wanted.

However, I'm thinking now of getting more specific and perhaps buying 2 basses, one for hard rock/punk and one for anything smooth/funky (motown, ska etc. hope I'm not annoying anyone by grouping those together but I don't want to buy 8 basses.)

As to the hard rock/punk bass, I've seen various threads here about "Punk tone" all of which have just turned into debates about what this tone is, and people saying "find your own sound".

So what, in your opinions, would be the best pickup configuration to get me tones like these:

I was thinking maybe a P/J set. Am I heading in the right direction with that idea?

Or is the most important thing here not the pickups? Keeping the strings fresh seems to be a major factor, are there any really important things I should know about choice of amps/pedals/anything else?

Apologies for the long first post, any help is appreciated. Oh, and no slights to my musical tastes please, I play a bit of everything but these are the tones I like for rock. To each his own.
