If you're not hung up on the "Fender" name, you may want to take a look at the Mike Lull P4. It's not cheap, but his necks are just killer! The feel is super comfortable and the craftmanship is superb. Hipshot hardware is standrad and you can get a choice of Seymour Duncan Basslines or Lindy Fralin pickups. And if you're not picky about colors, etc., wait for a used one to hit the market.

I own a 62 MIA RI I love, and a 72 and a 73...but the 64 is the stuff...

I love my 1983 Squier JV Precision. The feel and playability of it is great. It's also very light and loud acoustically. A previous owner fitted active EMG's but I'll forgive them that as it sounds great.

I've owned MIA & MIM P's, but my JV is by far my favourite of the P's I've owned & played. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those.

I'm with ya, the 80's Squier JV's were fantastic basses.

I'd take one of those over a lot of newer MIA's or MIM's any day.

Same pickups as the American Standard. Same hardware as the American Vintage. Big, wide neck, but not too huge. Everything fits and is finished just great on mine. Plus, I love maple boards.

same as mine P. yes, that's really good one bass from mexico factory. I'm not crazy for its glossy necks but everything else is great. you'll have real punchy ballsy P bass for so little money!

I got 4 P- basses. My 1966 plays like a dream. Also bought a 1965 P-neck on a Ebay a week a go. This neck is not close to my 66. Makes me kind of suprised and disapointed.
The 1966 neck is mutch more like a big legged woman.
My advice: If you are going to buy a old P- bass try them first.

I'm a personal fan of a maple-boarded MIA with the S1. I think the S1 makes a bigger difference on the P bass than any other Fender.

Pushed in, it makes the P bass slap sound nice.

Out, makes the classic P fingerstyle tone.

no way, it's only useful on a Jazz!

stock strings are fender nickels ...I like them - but they live only 2 days... I had my usual DR MMiller sig. fat beams and it sounded wonderfull. I changed them for Roto flats and it sucked big time... now I have roto swing rounds - still not in love. DR wins hands down for any of my basses so far!

I agree DR is my choice of strings as well Black Beauties to be exact. I love those strings.

I haven't played all the different models, but I sure am sorry that I got rid of one -- See-Thru blonde over Ash ( or Alder ) USA Deluxe. Great sounding and playing. Found out later that the color was very limited.

I bought a MIM p new in 04. Absolutely awsome!

I tried a stingray, shecter, MIA p, jass, modulus. Nothing compared to it, its just the diamond in the rough I guess you could say. Whoever built it, put in some work. Now, im not saying buy a new mim, but try some out. They can be hit or miss these days, but when you find a 'diamond' buy it!

You can easily find a 62 RI P-bass use for under a grand. I got one for 800.

I just recieved a 1997 MIA '62 RI P bass from eBay and it sounds better than my '74 all original P.

I was p!$$ed when I got it as it looks like it was dragged behind a truck and is scratched to hell (the seller said it had a few dings).

After playing it constantly for the last few days, I am keeping it. $700 for a bass I will likely never be able to sell for over $500 due to condition shows you how much I like this thing.

Great tone and punch. Hey, slap even sounds good on this bass!

I have played a few of the '62 RI P basses and have always been impressed.

I've played a few in stores (I already own a Fender '57 RI I love, though). I've been pretty impressed with the feel and the tone (punchy, as fenderphil said, due to the ash body and Fralin pickups). I'm also very pleased with the Lakland (Skyline DJ) I do own. I'd say there's a pretty good chance you'll be happy with it. And if you have any issues, Lakland has excellent customer service.

Best value must be a used MIA: I'd go for a late 90: graphite in the neck and no S1 switch, young enough enough not to be knocked about and for no-one to have started thinking its worth putting in a glass case.

I agree--I have one that fits this description and it is a great P-bass (bought mine new back then and played the hell out of it).
I see no point in the S-1---glad mine doesn't have one.
