Double Bass Best Large Condenser for under $500

I prefer ribbon mics in the studio. I have two vintage Shure SM-33 mics from the early 60s. The nice thing about these is that the figure 8 pattern is reduced to a cardoid pattern through internal dampening. I've heard good things about the new CAD ribbons, but you have to be able to deal with the figure-8 pattern. For live performance, the Audio Technica ATM-35 is great. I believe Telarc recorded Ray Brown with this mic for some of the live trio cds. Another small mic that is overlooked is the original Shure SM-98. The best thing about these miniature mics is that you can place them closer to the body of the bass without them getting in the way. I rigged up a long miniature gooseneck with a clamp that attaches to the tailpiece. It gave me a great deal of flexibility in placing the mic.

I have both the Audio Technica ATM-35 and the audix ADX20i , although both sound very nice live, i really prefer the Audix, and i can play loud with this mike,i clip it in the f-hole and point it to the body of the bass, the sound is very full.
For studio theres nothing like a ribbon for me.

I decided on a matched pair of Octava MK012's with the six capsules. This, to me, seems like a good starter set for a newbie who plays all acoustic instruments (fiddle, banjo, guitar and bass). The caps will give me a chance to get acquainted with the different sounds and I will learn to record in stereo. At $600 I think that gives me a lot to work with and I have heard a lot of good comments on the genuine Octavas. The negative have mostly been regarding longevity but knowing how well I take care of my stuff I think I will get what I need out of them. I may spring later for a LDC like the AT4050 or a AT4047 to experiment on the bass as well as vocals and general recording. Reuben swears by his LDC and others expressed preferences for the ribbons. I'm going to shoot right down the middle with the SDC and I'll post the results when I get something down that I can live with. Thanks again.
