do you really need those exta 4 frets? 20frets will work just as good. I'd say look into some BC Rich stuff, they've got a few 5bangers that are pretty decent. a MM will kick ass too

I play death metal with an American standard Jazz bass and a 5 string MM Sub 5.

Metal was born for the purpose of crazy paint and bass bodies so jagged you can't even play them beyond the 8th fret....HELL, a metal bass can EVEN look AND PLAY like a smooth rounded Fender, but has to have at least ONE point on it....

A lot of the metal guys are playing Ibanez Soundgears now. You can't go wrong with an ESP with active EMGs though. Honestly you can get a good metal sound out of just about any bass after hooking it up to a good distortion pedal.

Im starting to look at the musicman bongos...i dont really like the looks of them or much of any music man bass, but theres something about it that i like :S. Any opinions on the steinbergers or the plexiglass bass by ampeg?

Novy of Vader/Dies Irae uses em and it sounds really really good

For metal one can use any bass, it just depends on you're likes. Alex Webster sound is nothing really hard to archieve It has more to do with the amp setup. There is a guy on youtube which adores his style and plays exacly like him, just search for bass covers of cannibal corpse and u'll find him. You can ask him more about archieving that sound.

Dingwall basses are great, very comfortable a huge variety of sound and super comfortable to play. So if you consider getting one and you have the oportunity of trying one out you'll probably buy it emediatly.
We'll you could also look out for a used Modulus Q5 with EMG PUs, the you can be shure to archieve Alex's sound. IMO that is his real sound, he also always uses his Q5 on live shows. If you're lucky you might get one for around $1500. Very nice bass indeed!

I wholeheartedly agree with the Warwick thumb suggestion! They are a bit pricey, though, but nothing cuts through distorted guitars quite like 'em, IMHO. And, the NT versions have 26 frets!

I'm GAS'ing for a Bongo as well, and it would mainly be used for (progressive) death metal. Me thinks it would kick ass!

Yup, Bongo. As long as you have a decent enough amp, you WILL be heard. The 4-band EQ and the massive high-gain humbuckers means you can shape a low-end that will crumble your guitarists Marshalls, or give you enough high-end to sizzle their eyebrows

I'd recommend checking out the models with piezo pickups; they really do add a nice little bit of high-end sizzle for me.
