on a more serious note, i'm always surprised you don't see more metal bands using stingrays.
Ample high end and cutting, but I've always thought they weren't necessarily the best for detuning. It has been a long time since I had my Sterling, but I seem to recall the strings fitting pretty tight through the holes, thus thicker strings would require the bridge to be reamed out.
I think (although I could be wrong) he may have played it in the infamous video that was filmed in Poland that ended up getting them banned from the country. Search youtube and thou shalt find.
When I listened to metal, and looked at Circus and Hit Parader magazines in the '80s, I saw a lot of pics of BC Rich, Fender, and Hamer basses.

Stingray or Sterling. P bass, P/J or J bass. Schecter Omen-4,-5, Elite 4,-5,-8, Shadowsky, Spector, Squire or whatever.
Basically, anything works for metal. Except upright basses, but who knows.

I'm also skeptical as to whether or not they used real animals and blood for that DVD, they seem like props to me.
Anyway, back on topic... I've always found Stingray's and G&L L2000's to be my main axe of choice for heavy music. The American L2000 (not the tribute)

Wrong answer, Upright does work for metal(yes maybe it's rare) I even sawn a whamola in a junk punk band so what could happen!!!! I play a ministar when i jam with metalheads and punkheads.... So here is the......

1. Take your #1 bass.
2. Put a strap on it.
3. Put it on your shoulder.
4.Plug it in an amp.
5. Play a helluva metal riff from it.

too bad this isn't actually metal, but rather a chrome-paint job. Looks super-sick though!

can't believe a guy who in the profile states alex webster as an influence CAN say that metal bass is boring
I'll throw in another option... I have enjoyed a few Spector's for cutting through a dense wall of distorted guitars.
I'll speak up for the stuff I've owned (have had hundreds of basses)
I'm a fan of an RJ-IV.. yes once again it's Peavey.. easy to use.. active pickups.. ebony neck.. big inlays.. can be had for under $500
