@Tituscrow...good point and I enjoyed coroner as well...just never made the connection till ya mentioned it*
Haha yeah....Watchtower were great, but Coroner....those guys were/are on another planet. One of my favourite three pieces.
In between there's the bass. It may not seem 'interesting' because it locks with the drums beat by beat and the tone was crafted to fill only the freqs left free by the guitars. You wouldn't hear all those those sharp riffs with such a surgical precission with a woobly bass in the background. It's called rhythm section for a reason - and they're doing that job flawlessly (and that's all there is to it). All the modern metal is just copying FF's recipe when it comes to super tight sound.

You've never heard of Mudvayne? They are very far from obscure.

Plenty of great shouts here, but to reiterate, there is Meshuggah, then there is everyone else.
I'd say Sean Malone and Sean Reinert. Malone isn't usually as flashy as those guys but their bass n drum pocket is superb.
Dave Edwardson and Jason Roeder of Neurosis. Especially on the 90s albums.
Obviously Steve Harris and Nicko McBrain have to be mentioned (and have been) on this thread.
I don't know their names, but Cult of Luna has an awesome rhythm section as well.

What about groups like Origin, Beyond Creation, Obscura, etc.? I saw Cephalic Carnage and Cynic, both great choices.
If you like Obscura I suggest you check those other guys out. I haven't listened much to Cephalic but the others are wicked.
If you like Obscura, you'll probably like Beyond Creation. Their bassist also uses a 6 string fretless, and plays it very well.
I recommend Origin, check out their live videos. Their bassist is out of this world. Seeing them live - he nails all those notes fluidly. AND it also sounds good!
I dislike Origin, actually. Not personally, obviously. Just not the music for me.
I'm really, really picky about death metal. I'm more of a doom metal guy, some black metal.
