Early Megadeth had an incredible rhythm section, with Gar Samuelsson on drums and Dave Ellefson on bass. In the 1980s scene at least, they really couldn't be touched.
Unlike the other thrash metal drummers, Samuelsson had a background in jazz, and he threw in a ton of elements missing from others, all at full speed.
If you listen to some of Gar's isolated drum tracks on Youtube, you'll only appreciate him more.
I'm kinda confused. Only one mention of Mudvayne...L.D. 50 was a rhythm section showcase.

I agree. They fit so well even when they play something completely different. Sometimes I get confused just listening much less trying to keep up and their live shows are some of the best I've seen

Between The Buried and Me. No question in my book.
Fear Factory hands down. Then Pantera, (old) Megadeth, Overkill and from the new wave Havok.
I'm going to go ahead and say Alice in Chains here, not really metal but neither are 2/3rds of the bands mentioned so I figure I can get away with it!
Check out a defunct band from Texas called: 'WATCHTOWER'
Album 'Control and Resistance'
Incredible rhythm team work showcase !
