Best overall metal rhythm section?

Early Megadeth had an incredible rhythm section, with Gar Samuelsson on drums and Dave Ellefson on bass. In the 1980s scene at least, they really couldn't be touched.

Unlike the other thrash metal drummers, Samuelsson had a background in jazz, and he threw in a ton of elements missing from others, all at full speed.

If you listen to some of Gar's isolated drum tracks on Youtube, you'll only appreciate him more.

+1 for those unfamiliar listen to hook in mouth. A singular vibe equal to Maiden.

Jonesy/Bonham (some peeps are stating that they're not "Metal" but during the early '70's the only band "heavier" was Sabbath), Duce/McClain (Machine Head), Harris/McBrain, Myung/Portnoy, Lee/Peart (not Metal but not many combos better), Grey/Jordison, Adler/Campbell, sooooo many great combos to choose from!!! Fear Factory's Stroud/Hoglan was an amazing combo.

I agree. They fit so well even when they play something completely different. Sometimes I get confused just listening much less trying to keep up and their live shows are some of the best I've seen

Never heard of them. There are a million obscure guys who are killer players. The best wind up with platinum albums or whatever the iTunes equivalent is.

I'm kinda confused. Only one mention of Mudvayne... L.D. 50 was a rhythm section showcase.

Yea, I'm quite ashamed of myself for missing them out. Matt's a severely underrated drummer, and Ryan's just fantastic. Awesome technique (I rip off his two-finger hammer/slap technique a fair bit), and is actually a trained jazz bass player. He and Matt never step on each other and were basically the whole driving force on LD50, uncoincidentally their best album IMO.
