Which has the best low frequency?

The Physics at work in any well sealed headphone guarantees very good low frequency response

The question is therefore not what sealed headphones have good low end, but which headphones are well balanced over the rest of their response.

This is not true of open air headphones - you should be looking at sealed (closed back) headphones.

Been using the Sony's for many years. Great phones.

Either the Sony MDR-7506 or the Sennheiser HD-280 work VERY WELL for monitoring in a live or studio context, although people might mistake you for a DJ! Both can be had for sub-$100.

Both are very similar in their ability to give you a very analytical rendering, and at the same time give you a very listenable experience. Both are great for tracking- I use the Senn, while my guitarist is partial to the Sony.

Can't really help with in-ear monitors, if that's your thing.

I have the Sony, and the AKG 701, they are both nice, but Westone UM30, three driver IEM's have changed my world. I hear (pun) the more drivers you get, the better it sounds but with just 3, it's something to behold. The bad news is I can hear every nuance (mistake) in my playing.

Check out the Blue Lola. I have trouble using headphones for long periods, they cause inner ear swelling. Not with these. Better than my Beyerdynamic and Sony headphones. They sound great.

For mixing, you want your headphone frequency response flat so that the phones don't influence the mix. To do that, check this out.

Can anyone recommend the best over the ear headphones for recording/performance for bassists?

i think it really depends on what you expect: if you want to hear great bass, mainly, without to much regard for the rest of it = get phones with actual 8 ohm speakers. they're clunky/heavy but offer the best actual bass response. they're also the cheapest, usually. they will not be good as reference headphones. if you want reference phones: the cheapest are AKG K-240's.
