Best pick ups for Epiphone EB-3?

You see... this opened a whole can of worms. A black pup would mean I would have to install a black replacement bridge and black tuners... I could make this my EB-3's evil twin.

Most instruments with chrome hardware have black pickups. Rewinding the stock pickup would be a solution.

The EB-O sounds totally different from the EB-3... even when the EB-3's neck pup is solo'd. The EB-0 is brighter.

A stock EB-3 has a choke to remove the midrange from the neck pickup. The EB-0 had a .02 cap removing top end.

One thing that hasn;t been mentioned is what type of amplification are you using?

I've had a couple of Epi EB-3s and to be quite frank they sound like Jazz basses with 10x the power - a jazz bass for real men if you like. You can eaisly dial in the honk but with the added boost of low end that the neck pickup gives.

I was using mine in my wedding band so it had to do a hell of a lot of different sounds and it did them very well

but to answer the OP - I was never able to find a replacement bridge pickup either

I didn't know this. I don't know if it applies to my lawsuit EB-3 and EPI EB-0... but I can open them to find out.

This thread has me looking on the internets for things to do to this EB-0. I am going to give it a set up tonight and take to band practice this week just to see how she sounds....

Let me first say this....I LIKE MUDDY -- I LIKE LOW --- I LIKE FELIX PAPPALARDIS SOUND via his EB-1's. I believe he had a similar neck pickup in those models and modded the tone controls.

I'm putting together an EB3 from an Epiphone body/neck. From there, I may go stock pups, rewound pups or CHOKED / CAPPED stock controls.

I read the Mike Watt mods and I like the way he just got what he wanted and put it in. That being said I WANT TO KEEP / ENHANCE THE LOWS !!!!!

I see that Gotoh has EB-3 pickups (BassPartsResource.com has them), both neck and bridge versions. Anyone know anything about those?

I would try to chose between any aftermarket drop-in replacements. There are many to chose from, no need to route the body. Model 1 is available in black and cream, and being plastic you could paint it (instead of painting the guitar).

I'm trying to locate anyone who has retrofitted the 4-position selector Gibson EB-3 choke into the Epiphone EB-3. Looking for someone with aftermarket parts/kit, or maybe even from Gibson (anyone w/ part numbers)?

I'd like to do the same on an EPI EB3. The neck is a 34 inch scale so should I place the Rick neck pickup right up against the neck? From what I measure the distance from the nut would be the same as on a rick bass (33 inch scale).
Regarding the mahogany body of the EB-3, do you think there's anything to be gained by adding a maple top and bottom and routing a chamber ?
I'm not a woodworker but have access to the tools.

I got an Epiphone eb0 body from abay and built a frankensteined bass. I used a Ric neck pickup and a jazz bridge pickup. It sounds better than some of my $1000 basses.
