Double Bass Best portable amp for a double bass?

My husband plays double bass and I want to get him one of the new smaller bass amps for Christmas. But I'm not a bass player (or a musician), so I need recommendations. He gigs in clubs and some outdoor festival venues regularly. He plays rockabilly, folk, Texas Swing, and sometimes jazz. What would you recommend?

This is a wonderful Christmas present...

... And, since there is so much variety and a lot of double bass technology related to this decision, it might be best to send him here himself to talk details with those who are really expert at this kind of thing (like @Ric Vice above and many others here), along with the budget you'd like him to live within. With all the possible choices, it's best for him to get something he really knows he needs and can use.

While it may not be under the Christmas tree before Christmas, the wonderful Christmas surprise for him will be that you care enough about his double bass playing to think of this!!!

It's a beautiful present but there are many factors at play here. How loud is his band? What kind of pickup is he using? Does he already have a preamp?

Maybe have a read through Gollihur's site - there is a lot of good info there... and IMHO you might be best to make him a card, send him this link Amplifiers & Speakers, at Gollihur Music - Upright Basses, Pickups, Preamps, Amps, and More and tell him to go nuts.

Very thoughtful, but you're going to get a boat load of suggestions and it will get confusing. It might be better just to give him the money you want to spend and let him buy it.
