and you don't hear many people mention this, but i think Junta by Phish (debut album) has some really incredible prog stuff on here.

Never been a fan of splitting music into so many sub-genres, but since some consider Iron Maiden to be progressive metal, I'll say I really liked Somewhere In Time. (7th Son got a little to soft for me and I pretty much stopped listening to them after that one.)

I was more recently turned on to Hammers of Misfortune, and enjoyed their album, Locust Years. If anyone has some current Prog metal bands/albums they enjoy, I'd be eager to hear about them.

Already been mentioned (multiple times in some cases), but for me, the prog rock sun rises and sets on Close to the Edge by Yes. That's their creative zenith, IMHO, before they got too self-indulgent on Tales from Topographic Oceans. I was blown away when I first heard that one, and I still geek out on it occasionally.

Also, I had some older friends turn me on to Kansas in my teens. Masque would have to be my favorite of theirs. (The post-Kansas band A.D. is also with a listen.)

I don't get into the "metal" side of prog much (King Crimson is about the nastiest I like), definitely not the Dream Theatre kind, I like prog to have lots of space in the recordings and lots of room for all instruments to get weird
